People underestimate how dangerous digging deep holes at the beach actually is. The sand looks harmless, but it’s heavy, unstable, and collapses in seconds. Once it caves in, it’s like being buried under cement... you can’t move, you can’t breathe, and panic makes it worse. Every year there are accidents where kids and even adults get trapped because the walls of the hole suddenly give way. Rescue is tough too, because the more you dig, the more the sand shifts back in. It’s not like water where you can swim out. Beaches are for fun, but safety matters. Digging small pits is fine, but when people start making chest-deep holes, they’re putting their lives on the line without realizing it. Glad they’re getting attention now... hope it serves as a warning for others.

This is why we didn't allow digging on the beach when I was a lifeguard. In this situation they should have started building a wall much sooner to prevent more water from coming in.
