I'm from the former communist country of Romania. My parents and extended family lived there for years. I was born there and moved away while still a young child. The only people I ever interact with who for some reason support communism, have never lived in a communist country.

"It could never happen here"

Ever since I read Three Body Problem, I have been telling anyone who will listen that the struggle session scene is a good enough reason to justify reading the whole book.

Stalin’s camps in the Vorkuta region of Siberia had a mortality rate of 20%, meaning every five years the entire population of the camps had perished. And Vorkuta was only a small part of the global camp system established by the USSR and the CCP. Even for those few who survived they are broken (health and spirit) for the remainder of their short lives. People often focus on the deadly impact of communism on individuals, but its destruction of institutions is equally devastating - an institution like the Russian Orthodox Church that had existed for almost a thousand years was gutted beyond repair and nearly fully exterminated, with hundreds of thousands of clergy and tens of millions of the faithful murdered or imprisoned. The same happened in Eastern Europe after WWII to the Catholic Churches. Religious education, secular schools, businesses, all were taken over and either destroyed outright or converted to serve the state. The railroads from Europe to Asia are littered with corpses of humans transported to slave camps and who perished along the way, travelers on there railroads see vast forests but have no idea of the human cost buried beneath them. And the cost on the environment is staggering, Chernobyl was only one event, the destruction of communist-occupied landscapes by runaway communist manufacturing is horrific. Right now you can look on Google Earth and see North Korea dumping horrible toxins directly into their rivers, which flow into the sea. We must stop this resurgence of Marxism. The future of the planet and of all humanity is at risk.

A lot of young communists on X believe Communism means they can engage in their favorite pastimes all day and have a decent apartment.
