I don't have a degree, have worked in FAANG, worked at some of the largest organizations in the world and currently work at a fortune 500 company. I've also helped thousands of people land their first jobs in tech who have similar backgrounds. He is very wrong.

The best engineers I’ve ever worked with were self-taught. Some of the worst engineers I’ve ever worked with had a CS degree. Take that how you will, but you can have multiple ways to achieve a goal Degree, bootcamp, no degree, doesn’t matter. If you want to learn it. You will

If he doesn't know any self taught or boot camp folks he's terrible at networking. I'm self taught. No university. I was a staff engineer at Google. I have no doubt that I wrote code that this guy uses every day.

I’m a self taught software engineer and am doing pretty well. A CS degree can help, but it’s definitely not a requirement. I’ve worked with both self-taught engineers and engineers with a CS degree. As long as they’re passionate about software engineering they both bring something to the table.

Truth is, nobody fucking knows Of course this guy's going to say that he's successful because he is formally educated in CS, that's the whole schtick of career-advice tiktok videos. You say something with 100% certainty because that's what people want to hear on tiktok. People don't want nuanced and context-sensitive career advice that they have to carefully introspect in order to figure out which parts apply to them, that's too much effort. None of this: "it depends on what kind of learner you are, and whether you can successfully pick up new skills through self-directed learning; there are lots of people in industry who have done so, but only you can figure out whether it will work for you" Nope, I tuned out halfway through due to all the big words. That seems complex, I'm not gonna figure out the answer, how do I know it's right? This is what people want on tiktok: "Follow this simple step to be successful like me: get a degree. I did it, so you should to." Wow, so easy to understand, so unambiguous, it seems so simple. I will listen to this guy, he doesn't make me think. Don't even need to question it, because that also takes effort

I dropped out of High School. I didn’t go to college for computers. I got out of prison in 2012. You am 100% self-taught. I make as much as this ass-hat. ⭐️Follow me for more tech career advice.⭐️
