I’m a self taught software engineer and am doing pretty well. A CS degree can help, but it’s definitely not a requirement. I’ve worked with both self-taught engineers and engineers with a CS degree. As long as they’re passionate about software engineering they both bring something to the table.

People don't want nuanced and context-sensitive career advice that they have to carefully introspect in order to figure out which parts apply to them, that's too much effort.
