Albert Maguire received the 2026 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for developing a therapy for inherited retinal degeneration that became the first FDA-approved gene therapy for a genetic disease. Maguire recalled that the project began nearly four decades ago during conversations with his now wife (and co-awardee) Jean Bennett. What started as a simple idea eventually led into a breakthrough treatment that has transformed the lives of patients around the world.

Albert Maguire received the 2026 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for developing a therapy for inherited retinal degeneration that became the first FDA-approved gene therapy for a genetic disease.
