This deformation can disrupt the normal function of neurons, including how they communicate with each other. - Neurochemical Changes: The mechanical impact leads to a cascade of neurochemical changes within the brain. There's a sudden release of neurotransmitters, which can cause neurons to become overexcited. This change in activity can lead to a temporary disruption in normal brain function. - Ionic Imbalance: Concussions cause a flux in ions, such as potassium and calcium, across the neuron's membrane. Normally, neurons maintain a careful balance of ions inside and outside the cell, but the trauma disrupts this balance.
