Nothing new is created." Affleck concedes the point but pivots to the deeper issue of taste: "Craftsman is knowing how to work. Art is knowing when to stop. And I think knowing when to stop is going to be a very difficult thing for AI to learn because it's taste." He adds that current AI also suffers from "lack of consistency, lack of controls, lack of quality." But Affleck is clear-eyed about where AI will hit hard. The visual effects industry is in his crosshairs: "I wouldn't like to be in the visual effects business. They're in trouble because what cost a lot of money is now going to cost a lot less and it's going to hammer that space more than it already is." His take: maybe it shouldn't take a thousand people to render something. AI will make backgrounds more convincing, change the color of a shirt, fix mistakes. It might even let studios produce "two seasons of House of the Dragon in a year instead of one." That's compression, not replacement. SITUATION EXPLAINED: A new generation of AI labs are betting that world models are the path to general intelligence that can interact with the real world. We had General Intuition CEO Pim de Witte on MTS to explain what world models are, and why intuitively world models offer a clearer path towards general intelligence than LLMs. For humans, text is a technology for compressing information about the unfolding, three-dimensional world around us and communicating it to other people. When LLMs reason about the world, they do so by reconstructing the world through text. World models work by modeling the three-dimensional world at the architecture level and then allowing agents to interact with that world. Unlike an LLM, which understands space and time through text, world models perform spatial and temporal reasoning natively. General Intuition hopes to use world models to create embodied AI—machines that can reason and act in the real world. But other companies are also pushing the frontier in this space. Odyssey ML today announced a multi-agent world model, Agora-1. Their launch video shows four participants interacting with a real-time world model simulation of GoldenEye, a first-person shooter for the N64. SITUATION EXPLAINED: A new generation of AI labs are betting that world models are the path to general intelligence that can interact with the real world. We had General Intuition CEO Pim de Witte on MTS to explain what world models are, and why intuitively world models offer a clearer path towards general intelligence than LLMs. For humans, text is a technology for compressing information about the unfolding, three-dimensional world around us and communicating it to other people. When LLMs reason about the world, they do so by reconstructing the world through text. World models work by modeling the three-dimensional world at the architecture level and then allowing agents to interact with that world. Unlike an LLM, which understands space and time through text, world models perform spatial and temporal reasoning natively. General Intuition hopes to use world models to create embodied AI—machines that can reason and act in the real world. But other companies are also pushing the frontier in this space. Odyssey ML today announced a multi-agent world model, Agora-1. Their launch video shows four participants interacting with a real-time world model simulation of GoldenEye, a first-person shooter for the N64. "My prediction is by the end of 2028, it's more likely than not that we have an AI system where you would be able to say to it, 'Make a better version of yourself.' And it just goes off and does that completely autonomously." The reason: models have moved from basic coding into "the production of science itself" and the "unglamorous but fundamental engineering work" behind large-scale R&D. "An AI system that can build itself [has] big implications, and we'd like to start thinking about it now." That is the actual agent threshold: not demos, not chat UX, but AI becoming part of the loop that improves AI.
