I keep thinking about that photo from Trump’s inauguration. Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Sundar Pichai, four of the most powerful men in the world, standing together, just feet away from the president. In the seats usually reserved for the president’s family. It’s such a striking image. But it was also more than that. It was a statement. A visual argument about where power now lives. It’s no secret that Silicon Valley is more powerful than ever. These are the CEOs of the most profitable companies in history. And over the past two decades, they’ve used that wealth to reshape the public sphere. But this felt different. This wasn’t discreet, backdoor lobbying, or a furtive effort to curry favour with an incoming administration. These men were quite literally aligning themselves with the most powerful politician in the world – and his increasingly illiberal ideology. In some ways, it felt like the logical endpoint of the shifting of power towards Silicon Valley that’s been going on for decades. But in other ways, it felt like the start of something new. Something we don’t quite have the vocabulary for yet. My guest this week, Carole Cadwalladr , has been tracking this evolution for years. She's an investigative journalist who broke the Cambridge Analytica story – an investigation into how Facebook data may have been used to manipulate elections. That story, maybe more than any other, helped us understand the power social media has over our democracy. But I think Carole understood it as something else too: an early warning about what happens when technological power collides with authoritarian politics. Now, she’s arguing that what we’re witnessing isn’t just monopoly power, or even oligarchy in the traditional sense. She calls it techno-authoritarianism – a fusion of Trump’s authoritarian political project with the technological might of Silicon Valley. Intoxicated police chief gets shoved into a squad car by the sergeant on scene because the chief laid hands on him during his traffic stop the sergeant was working. ​What happens when the person in charge is the one obstructing the investigation? ​ Sgt. William Major was working a DWI scene when his boss, Chief Leonard Guida, showed up off-duty, in plain clothes, and—according to the officers on scene—highly intoxicated. ​Instead of assisting, the Chief began berating Sgt. Major over… a peeling jacket. Chief Guida claimed the reflective lettering on Major’s uniform was "ridiculous" and unfit for duty. The sergeant removed the jacket to appease him. ​The situation turned physical when Guida grabbed the Sergeant’s arm trying to yank him away from his traffic stop. Major didn't hesitate—he shoved the Chief onto the hood of the patrol car, shouting: ​"Don't you touch me, don't you touch me!" ​The chief immediately suspended him telling him he needed to return to the department to wait for him. Alan Rickman nearly turned down the iconic role of Hans Gruber in "Die Hard" (1988), as he didn't want to be in an action movie. But he was finally convinced by agents & people around him to take the role. Here is Alan Rickman explaining it: "I didn’t know anything about Los Angeles. I didn’t know anything about the film business … I’d never made a film before, but I was extremely cheap,” After reading the script, he thought: “What the hell is this? I’m not doing an action movie" "Agents and people said: ‘Alan, you don’t understand, this doesn’t happen. You’ve only been in L.A. two days, and you’ve been asked to do this film I was just thinking: If I was wearing a suit and not all of this terrorist gear, then maybe there could be a scene where I put on an American accent, and he thinks I’m one of the hostages. This investigation is being treated as a suspected hate-motivated offence. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-3500, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), or at When suspected hate-motivated offences are reported to police, the investigation could be led by a Divisional investigator with the support of the Hate Crime Unit (HCU), or in some cases, will be investigated exclusively by the HCU. Remember when UnitedHealth's CEO was assassinated in 2024? 18 months later, every accusation the killer Luigi Mangione made has been proven RIGHT. UnitedHealth is one of the biggest corporate collapses in recent years. And they deserve it. In December 2024, UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed outside a Hilton hotel in midtown Manhattan on his way to an investor meeting. The suspected shooter, Luigi Mangione, was carrying a notebook that accused the health insurance industry of being parasites who profit by denying people medical care. The shell casings found at the scene were engraved with the words "deny," "defend," and "depose." The public reaction was unlike anything corporate America had ever seen. People openly celebrated the killing online. UnitedHealth's stock dropped $110 billion in the weeks that followed. And then it got so much worse... In May 2025, CEO Andrew Witty suddenly resigned citing "personal reasons." Days later, the Wall Street Journal revealed that the DOJ's Healthcare Fraud Unit had been running a criminal investigation into UnitedHealth for over a year, focused on their Medicare Advantage business. Then The Guardian published an investigation based on thousands of internal records and over 20 current and former employees alleging that UnitedHealth placed its own medical teams in roughly 2,000 nursing homes and offered bonus payments tied to keeping residents OUT of hospitals, even when they needed urgent care. In at least two documented cases, residents showing stroke symptoms were advised against hospital transfers by UnitedHealth's remote providers. One suffered permanent brain damage. UnitedHealth says the DOJ previously investigated those specific nursing home allegations and declined to pursue them. They then sued The Guardian for defamation. But the whistleblowers, the internal records, and the congressional declarations tell a very different story, and multiple senators from both parties called for new federal investigations after the report dropped. A former UnitedHealth executive told The Guardian: "You gain profitability by denying care, and when profitability suffers for the shareholders, that's when people get crazy and do things that are not appropriate." On top of all this, UnitedHealth's subsidiary Change Healthcare suffered the largest ransomware attack in healthcare history, exposing the private medical records of 190 MILLION Americans. The company had to provide over $9 billion in emergency funding just to keep the healthcare system functioning. The stock went from an all-time high of $603 in November 2024 to $234 by August 2025. Over $250 billion in market value wiped out in less than a year. Warren Buffett saw the crash and thought it was a buying opportunity. Berkshire Hathaway bought $1.6 billion worth of UnitedHealth shares in August 2025, and the stock bounced 12% on the news alone. Yesterday, Berkshire disclosed that they dumped the entire position. MODI HAS FORGIVEN. SO, CHAPTER CLOSED? NO. NOT QUITE. Prime Minister Modi has forgiven minors and young people who have used abusive language. So, is this it? Chapter closed? NO. Because this is about something much bigger than the youth. It is about a culture that is steadily normalising abuse. Remember the NETFLIX series Adolescence. Let's be clear. As we saw in that series abuse is ugly, especially when it comes from children. But this week, during the NEET protests, India got a glimpse of its all pervasiveness. But how did India get here? The reality is that our young people are taking their cues from the real world around them. That world has changed. The code of conduct has dropped. Minors, young adult are now neck deep in a political-social culture where abuse is increasingly excused, even rewarded. Second, they are in a social media ecosystem where outrage and obscenity are amplified because they generate clicks and virality. Virality is the new currency. It's literally an income for a demographic that is down on its luck. Third, they are picking cues from a society that has become so desensitised that behaviour once considered unacceptable barely raises an eyebrow anymore. So what next? Yes, the law has a role. Punishment is a detterent. But it doesn't guarantee reform. So perhaps we also need stronger guardrails on social media so algorithms reward responsibility, not outrage. This will got to some extent in restoring civility to our public discourse. But we must also above all, look at parenting/mentoring. Because values are taught at home and in schools. This is an opportunity for the country to reflect. There is a need to reset and reclaim the standards of public conduct we want adolescents to inherit.

Scarlett: I do have to admit that Zeudi and Maria Rosaria have changed my life with the aerosol. I've got to speak the truth. Zeudi: Do you remember when you judged me? Scar: I didn't judge you. Z: Yes, for the sound. Scar: Yeah, because obviously the sound of the aerosol is really loud, and Zeudi says to me that her whole family loves the sound of the aerosol. And when she sent me the YouTube recreation of the sound that they fall asleep to, I was like, "Oh my God, this is so intense. How?" And then when I started using the aerosol, I suddenly was like, I'm actually quite tired because it's quite ASMR, and now I get it. But her mum and her have literally saved my life with this because I have, or had, and I'm ashamed to admit it, an addiction to Sudafed Blue. It was actually quite severe. Five years strong. If I didn't have it on me, I would panic because my nose would get so blocked. Last time I was in Naples, I booked the wrong flight home. Look, happens to the best of us. Don't want to talk about it. It's actually an embarrassment at my age, but here we are. It's not the first time. I'm sure it won't be the last. And so I was panicking though because this is how bad it is. I was bargaining on getting back to the UK by midday because I'd ran out of my Sudafed blue, so I was like, "Right, I've got one spray left before I get to the UK, and then I've got it on speed dial." Because I knew they didn't have it in Italy. So first thing when I missed my flight is not, "Okay, I get to spend more time with my beautiful girlfriend." Sadly, my first thought is, "Shit, the Sudafed. What am I going to do?" So I can feel the panic in me rising. So Zeudi’s like, "Okay, don't worry. We go to my house. My mom will fix this." And I'm thinking, "No disrespect, but what could your mom possibly fix after five years?" And bless Maria Rosaria comes into the room with hot salt in a sock and starts dabbing my face. I'm sat there like, "what is going on?" And then Zeudi comes in with the aerosol kit, and I'm like, "Right, these Italians mean business." And I just surrender. Normally I'd be like, "No," but obviously I know better than to fight not one, but two Italian women, okay? So I'm just sat there like, they could've said, "Look, we're going to amputate your arm," and I would've just said, "Fair enough." And so Zeudi’s mom's dabbing my face with the salt and then holding the aerosol up my nose, and I'm just like... And then lo and behold, after an hour, I can suddenly blow my nose. Scarlett: I do have to admit that Zeudi and Maria Rosaria have changed my life with the aerosol. I've got to speak the truth. Zeudi: Do you remember when you judged me? Scar: I didn't judge you. Z: Yes, for the sound. Scar: Yeah, because obviously the sound of the aerosol is really loud, and Zeudi says to me that her whole family loves the sound of the aerosol. And when she sent me the YouTube recreation of the sound that they fall asleep to, I was like, "Oh my God, this is so intense. How?" And then when I started using the aerosol, I suddenly was like, I'm actually quite tired because it's quite ASMR, and now I get it. But her mum and her have literally saved my life with this because I have, or had, and I'm ashamed to admit it, an addiction to Sudafed Blue. It was actually quite severe. Five years strong. If I didn't have it on me, I would panic because my nose would get so blocked. Last time I was in Naples, I booked the wrong flight home. Look, happens to the best of us. Don't want to talk about it. It's actually an embarrassment at my age, but here we are. It's not the first time. I'm sure it won't be the last. And so I was panicking though because this is how bad it is. I was bargaining on getting back to the UK by midday because I'd ran out of my Sudafed blue, so I was like, "Right, I've got one spray left before I get to the UK, and then I've got it on speed dial." Because I knew they didn't have it in Italy. So first thing when I missed my flight is not, "Okay, I get to spend more time with my beautiful girlfriend." Sadly, my first thought is, "Shit, the Sudafed. What am I going to do?" So I can feel the panic in me rising. So Zeudi’s like, "Okay, don't worry. We go to my house. My mom will fix this." And I'm thinking, "No disrespect, but what could your mom possibly fix after five years?" And bless Maria Rosaria comes into the room with hot salt in a sock and starts dabbing my face. I'm sat there like, "what is going on?" And then Zeudi comes in with the aerosol kit, and I'm like, "Right, these Italians mean business." And I just surrender. Normally I'd be like, "No," but obviously I know better than to fight not one, but two Italian women, okay? So I'm just sat there like, they could've said, "Look, we're going to amputate your arm," and I would've just said, "Fair enough." We were going through Central Park on our way to the airport when over the cab’s radio came ‘Crying’ by Roy Orbison, and I’m listening to this song and I said, ‘That! I’ve got to get that for Blue Velvet. When I got to Wilmington I sent somebody out to get Roy Orbison’s greatest hits. I played ‘Crying’ and then I played ‘In Dreams’, and as soon as I did, I forgot ‘Crying’. ‘In Dreams’ explained to me so much of what the film was all about. I immediately called Dennis Hopper and told him about the scene I had in mind and that he had to memorize this song. Dennis and Dean Stockwell are old friends. Dean got together with Dennis to help him work out the song and memorize the lyrics. I wonder why! [Laughs.] So we finally got to the day we were going to shoot the scene in Ben’s apartment where Dennis was going to sing the song. We were rehearsing and Dean said, ‘I’ll stand here and kind of help Dennis if he needs it.’ So we started playing the music and both Dennis and Dean began to sing ‘In Dreams’. All of a sudden Dennis stops singing and looks at Dean — who’s continuing to sing. Dennis is solidly in character and he is moved by Dean’s (Ben’s) singing. There was the scene in front of me. It was so perfect. Once it was decided Dean would be singing ‘In Dreams’, another strange thing happened. I was going to use a small candle-style table lamp as the microphone. Dean knew the microphone was going to be a lamp of some sort and when he went over to the area of Ben’s apartment where we were going to set the song, thinking he saw the prop light, he picked up a work light that was hanging on a nail on the wall. He turned it on and flipped the long cord like a microphone cord and obviously it couldn’t have been more perfect. The strange thing is no one on the crew put that work light there. No one knew where it came from. Who can say how it happens?" Rodley: "The use of ‘In Dreams’ in that scene revived Roy Orbison’s career, but what did he think of the movie and the use of his music in it?" Lynch: "When Roy first saw the movie he didn’t like it. 🚨 / 🇫🇷 FRANCE ON FIRE After Boy Shot at Traffic Stop You’ve probably seen all the videos of buildings and cars on fire, the explosions and reported shootings in Europe’s 3rd largest economy. Some have even compared the footage to a war zone. While this is very dramatic, to say the least, it still shows the extent of the unrest in the country. But why? WHY? An officer shot and killed a 17-year-old North African boy at a traffic stop. A prosecutor has determined the need for an investigation for voluntary homicide. It was the third killing this year during a police traffic stop, after a record 13 deaths last year. Most of the victims have been black or Arab. A study by an independent French human rights watchdog found that Blacks and Arabs in France were 20x more likely to be stopped by Police. Amnesty International has been critical of French Police’s ethnic profiling and discrimination records. WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? Protests kicked off 3 days ago and continue to get worse. 40,000 law enforcement personnel were deployed in response to the unrest with hundreds of arrests and counting. Fears are mounting of a repeat of the 2005 riots, also sparked by the death of African boys during a Police chase, which saw mayhem in the country and thousands arrested. While most of France agree violent protests are never ok, some are using this as an opportunity to attack migrants and religious minorities, blaming them for the violence and claiming these riots are a result of lenient immigration laws. MY THOUGHTS: First, this hits close to home. I’ve spent a LOT of time in France and speak the language fluently. France is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, but they have their flaws, and we’re seeing one of them unravel yet again. We all agree the boy should not have been shot by the officer. We also agree that violent protests are NOT the answer. BUT, the problem goes deeper than this. Studies have shown systemic racism within the French police, despite denial by President Macron and France's Foreign Ministry. So, if there IS systemic issues, aren’t protests one way to force needed change? Yes and no. Protests serve an important piece of our democracy, one that should be cherished. They pressure authorities and Government officials to act. Unfortunately though, there will ALWAYS be bad actors in any protest, and these bad actors sometimes turn a peaceful protest in to a riot. When that happens, when a protest is dominated by rioters, a line is crossed. Do you agree with my take? WHEN does a protest CROSS THE LINE?

This retired American teacher knelt in the sand yesterday and filled that bottle with earth. He told us he plans to take it home to the United States and place it beside the tea set in his living room. I was standing right there, and at first I didn't understand why. But after hearing his explanation, I suddenly understood: this is no ordinary bottle of soil. It comes from a place where an act of kindness, planted 26 years ago, took root, grew, and ultimately became a forest. People here see him as a powerful symbol of what friendship between ordinary Americans and Chinese can still achieve. The story goes back to 1999, when Sakolsky, a teacher from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, came to China to teach English. He learned about Yin Yuzhen, a farmer who had already spent 14 years planting trees with her family in Mu Us, battling the desert day after day. Moved by her determination, Sakolsky raised and donated 5,000 USD to support her work. In the spring of 2000, he traveled out to the desert to visit Yin in person. Together, they planted a tree. That simple act of kindness took root in what was then a barren landscape. Yin used the donation to buy roughly 50,000 saplings, planting them around the tree they had planted together. Today, what was once desert has become a thriving woodland that bears his name. Yin never forgot him. Finally, this May, with the help of Inner Mongolia Radio and Television, Yin and Sakolsky reconnected. She invited him back to see how dramatically the land had changed. Their story quickly spread across China. In June, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng invited Sakolsky to the Chinese Embassy in DC, where he presented him with a Chinese tea set and handed him a visa for his return trip. Kindness had been seen and remembered; what was once given was now being answered in kind.
