I took Steve Ruiz's advice & got an ESP32! So much fun for ~$55. I programmed it to display live stats from my online radio station, and use the built-in mic to transcribe and send messages in the station's chat :) Here's everything I bought & how it works: - Waveshare ESP32-S3 1.54" e-Paper AIoT board ($30) - Wi-Fi, mics, speaker, battery charging built in - 3.7V 500mAh LiPo ($10) - JST 1.25 connector adapters ($15 for 20) - ESP32-S3 polls my radio's API over Wi-Fi every 20s → renders a "broadcast console" UI on the 200×200 e-paper - Hold-to-talk: dual mics record → WAV upload → server transcribes w/ OpenAI → posts to the live chat via websocket, pinned as the station owner (API-key auth) - Backend is my Wasp app (React/Node/Prisma) on Railway over 3 tiny endpoints: /status, /chat, /voice-chat - Firmware: PlatformIO + Arduino, GxEPD2 for the display, Waveshare's ES8311 codec drivers for the mic - Runs on battery, fully standalone Built the whole thing in a morning w Claude Fable 5. server endpoints, firmware. Someone built a laser turret that autonomously tracks and pops balloons for a school deadline, on an ESP32. The real story is the debugging: TinyML on the ESP32-CAM alone maxed out at 2fps. Switching to YOLO on a laptop helped but was still too slow. Baud rate bottleneck killed it again fixed by streaming over Ethernet instead, which finally gave smooth, precise tracking. Same $8 hardware philosophy as the article below local AI doesn't need a $3,000 rig, it needs the right bottleneck fixed.

Usually it is attended by a front desk employee but when she went that morning, he was busy helping another guest. For me, this was the moment when Halo went from being a War Story with futuristic elements to a Sci-fi Superhero Story. It’s an impossible shot. The camera flies around and through objects, time speeds up and slows down at random, the camera anticipates events that are scripted instead of reacting to capture them, there is no sense of space or proximity or cause and effect... It's like they gave the camera to Superman. That's all fine in a Superhero Story, but it breaks the stakes of a War Story. If the audience perspective is not grounded, then the stakes of the story are not grounded. It's exciting and flashy, but has as much impact as a kid playing with dolls.

What if we could RECREATE the REFLECTION of the FLASH seen in the GLASS during the Charlie Kirk assassination? Literally recreate it on site. The timing of the flash seen in the reflection of the glass is what makes it so interesting. What else would cause a flash that bright in the middle of the day? This could at least determine a lot of good information and confirm or deny theories that are out there. Just to get an idea of where the FLASH came from, which could identify a possible shooter or 2nd shooter location. The reason I say this is because it lines up perfectly with the sound of the gun, meaning you see the flash first, then you hear the shot, which would make sense because light travels faster than sound. This way we could get an idea of where it came from in the first place and determine if it's a good lead or not and then check the crowd or building locations. It could be recreated with a camera flash or something with bright enough lumens. This could clear up at least one theory or confirm it and lead us in the right direction of where the shooter could have been. Please comment with your thoughts and ideas. We need to get someone out there to the location with the Proper equipment. At least we could confirm or deny some theories. Video in bottom left shows the flash.

Tesla really goes out of their way to prevent anyone from hearing this. I think it sounds pretty cool! What do you think? This isn’t even a fancy model. Mid tier model Y, with a 4sec 0-60. I was doing some work on the car. Didn’t finish putting everything back, but had to drive it. Was surprised by how much more I could hear the motor noise. The camera is pointed at the missing rear seats, and the rear wheel motor is right under it.

This looks like a toy. It's actually the meanest little vision eval I've built. The task: look at an emoji image, then repaint it on a 16×16 grid, one pixel at a time. Just the model, a tiny canvas, and up to 2000 brushstrokes. What I didn't expect was the personalities. > some models REGRET a stroke and go back to repaint it > some get stuck looping the same little patch over and over, like they're trying to animate it > some are calm little surgeons and just nail it first try And the task is genuinely mean: it has to see the image, crush it down to 256 cells, then decide what's actually load-bearing: > the tears on 😂 but still keep the smile > the horn on 🦄 > the antenna on 🤖 and keep the soul of it with almost no resolution to spare. 5 models. 7 emojis. Once we started to work with large global retailers, we needed a better way to scale this process. Ideally, the staff at the store could do this themselves — rather than us flying our team across the world — and then we could lower the cost and timelines. So we built a self-serve version of our survey app, with a tutorial mode designed for beginners. Over time, we collected millions of data points, and so we were able to develop an algorithm which would auto-correct mistakes. In other words, if the surveyor accidentally placed their ground-truth location in the wrong place on the map, we could use our algorithms to detect it, and correct it. So now we have WiFi, and with and our efforts on producing a high quality survey, we have the best WiFi positioning available. With WiFi on its own, it’s achieving 3 meter accuracy. This is a great foundation to build on. WiFi + Motion data To refine this down to 1-meter accuracy, we realised that we could combine WiFi with the same technology behind self-driving cars and robotics: a motion system called SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping). SLAM uses the accelerometer, gyroscope and camera system to understand precise device motion. Imagine a car driving through a tunnel, using the motion since its last GPS ping to keep location accurate until it comes out the other side. On a phone, this technology is very reliable, and measures device motion with high precision. But SLAM is measuring motion within its own coordinate space, it’s not aligned with the real world. SLAM tracks the user’s relative motion, like “moved forward 2 meters, then turned left”, but does “forward” mean “north”, or some other direction? It’s not calibrated, so it could mean any location, any direction. We can’t rely on the compass to help us out with this, because phone compasses are notoriously incorrect — everyone knows the frustration of being sent the wrong way down a street. So our job was to align this motion data with the triangulation data we were receiving from WiFi. We designed an algorithm that could simulate every possibility, filter the unlikely scenarios, and hone in your location, using WiFi as an anchor. So WiFi gives us the initial blue dot, SLAM gives us motion, and as the user starts walking and we receive more data, our algorithms can refine location accuracy down to a consistent 1-meter accuracy. We’ve tested these algorithms in many locations, on hundreds of hours of ground-truth data:

So our job was to align this motion data with the triangulation data we were receiving from WiFi. We designed an algorithm that could simulate every possibility, filter the unlikely scenarios, and hone in your location, using WiFi as an anchor. So WiFi gives us the initial blue dot, SLAM gives us motion, and as the user starts walking and we receive more data, our algorithms can refine location accuracy down to a consistent 1-meter accuracy. We’ve tested these algorithms in many locations, on hundreds of hours of ground-truth data:

We wanted to see if we could take simple, physical materials (like cardboard and markers) and use AI to bring them to life. What was the result? A short film starring a bunch of TPUs getting ready for the big stage at Google I/O 2026! Working with director Laurie Rowan and Nexus Studios, we kept human artistry at the center of the film by blending puppetry and 3D animation with our models to do the following ↓ Nano Banana: Generated beautifully stylized first frames from the raw puppet footage and basic 3D animations. Google AI Studio: Built a custom tool inside the platform to test these frames at scale, ensuring pixel-perfect consistency Gemini Omni & experimental Google DeepMind Models: Merged the base animation and stylized frames to elevate the final piece to a cinematic level. Our AI pipelines were specifically designed to protect the crafty details that give these films their heart, like the tiny human imperfections of puppetry, or the nuance an animator can build into an expression.

Few months ago a young lad called Toby messaged me on instagram and asked if I’d follow him back, I jokingly replied .. I will if you come and spend the day out in the field with me, rather than all this through the screen stuff. He did it, his mum brought him at 5am to spend the day at RSPB Bempton Cliffs with me.. I used his little vlog camera to make him a video that he can share. He is a little legend, with a foot ailment that made it difficult to walk or stand for long, with a true passion for photography and determination to spend the day with me, it was unreal. He also had his dad’s old camera with manual focus and none of the gimmicks we all have in our silly cameras . All these photos are his. #wildlifephotography
