did you ever benchmark it vs. the react lib?

Not sure if we ever really did that, @malfaitrobin?

That would be so much better than react.

That works for simple use cases. For more complex ones, we need more control over the native top layer.

yeah top-layer is no good

This would be incredibly useful. My personal projects are almost always vanilla HTML, CSS, and JS. I've built many menus, custom dialogs, even full file trees from scratch, but having Base UI as a foundation would be very helpful.

I started something similar before, but paused it after hitting some SSR issues. This makes me want to pick it up again

As someone who builds public pages with @astrodotbuild I'd use it right away!

will it cancel all the work done for react popup implementation in base ui ?

no. native popover api + anchor positioning don't work. they're no good. i want them to work, and i want to replace base ui code with them, but they're not close to good enough currently, unfortunately.

For the date pickers, I also noticed that the calendar comp was removed and both pull requests were closed. As I understand it, that was an experiment. Do you plan to base them on the Temporal API? That could greatly simplify the implementation while also making it more robust.
