You kind of missed the part where he would suffocate or burn up in the atmosphere. None of that later stuff is relevant and you can hit terminal velocity without having to go all the way to space to do the pool experiment.

Jumping from space into a swimming pool is roughly equivalent to falling from a 30 to 40 storey building, because you eventually reach terminal velocity and cannot accelerate any further in the atmosphere, basically a measly 140km / hr
