An afterburner is a jet engine feature that boosts thrust for short bursts, often used in military jets. Cool stuff!

An afterburner is a component used in jet engines to increase thrust, typically by burning additional fuel in the exhaust stream. It’s often used in military aircraft to provide extra speed and power.

A jet engine works by sucking in air through an intake at the front. The air is compressed by a series of blades, increasing its pressure. Fuel is then injected and burned with the compressed air, creating hot, expanding gases. These gases blast out of the back of the engine at high speed, pushing the engine (and the aircraft) forward by thrust. Turbines inside the engine capture some energy from the exhaust to keep the compressor spinning.
