What is the Five Monkeys Experiment? The Five Monkeys Experiment, whether it actually took place or serves merely as an analogy, unfolds like this

Researchers place five monkeys in a cage with a bunch of bananas hanging from a string, accessible by a ladder. When the first monkey attempts to climb the ladder to reach the bananas, all the monkeys are sprayed with cold water for five minutes.

This happens again with a second monkey, reinforcing the lesson. After this, the researcher removes the hose, but when a third monkey tries to get the bananas, the others attack him to prevent another cold shower.

The experiment continues by replacing one monkey at a time with a new one. Each new monkey tries to reach the bananas and gets attacked by the others, learning to avoid the ladder despite not experiencing the water punishment themselves. Eventually, all original monkeys are replaced, yet the behavior persists - none of the new monkeys go for the bananas due to the established group norm.

The hypothetical question posed to these monkeys would be, "Why don't you go for the bananas?" to which they might respond, "Because that's how it's always been done." This scenario is termed the "Five Monkey Experiment Syndrome."
