I guess it makes sense that they're transparent. One of their primary functions is to collect light for photosynthesis.

Leaves with no chlorophyll, or reduced chlorophyll, are called variegated. Variegation is a naturally occurring adaptation that allows plants to adjust to changing conditions of light. Most of the variegated plants are natural shade plants, native to the forest floor.
