The reason they tell you to vote is because the ruling class knows the people cannot vote their way out of a capitalist dictatorship when both parties are completely controlled by capital. The only way to change a capitalist regime like the United States that values profits and property more than human life is to disrupt and take back the one thing the system cares about: Capital. To do this the working class must organize a mass movement to seize the means of production and put the economy directly in the hands of the people, not the oligarchs. A better world that puts people over profits is possible but only if we come together and fight for it!

Francesca Hong when asked if voters should fear socialism and communism: “No. This is a state where we will still have a $2.33 tipped minimum wage and $7.25 minimum wage. It's gonna be hard to turn that into socialism soon, but what we can do is fight for policies that put working-class people first.” This is a better answer than what we normally get from democratic socialists running for office. We live under a dystopian capitalist system where 70% of Americans struggle to afford housing, healthcare, and groceries, yet the media and both parties constantly fearmonger about socialism. It’s insanity! Socialists need to stop backing down when asked about socialism and communism. It’s not only weak but also concedes power to the capitalist system people are struggling under and fighting against. Socialists should pivot to policies that improve the material conditions of the working class and call out the absurd notion that we should “fear socialism” when we live under a capitalist system that’s failing the majority as it consolidates wealth into fewer and fewer hands. What people should fear is capitalism because it’s the reason our country is in decay.

Local politicians are no different, because they represent the same party and the same agenda. There are no Republicans on the Seattle City Council. During my decade as the lone independent socialist in City Hall, this meant that it was the Democratic Party politicians who opposed our movements every step of the way to protect the interests of big business and the corporate landlords. By using my office to build working-class movements, my fellow revolutionary socialists and I were able to defeat big business and their political servants in the Democratic Party time and time again. We overcame their opposition and won historic victories like the nation’s highest minimum wage, the Amazon Tax, landmark renters’ rights, and important protections for immigrants and peaceful protestors. Many of our victories began with one lone vote in favor — mine — and eight opposed. Yet with a fighting strategy, including class struggle tactics like our public comment actions, our socialist leadership decisively shifted the balance of power in City Hall and delivered huge gains for the working class.
