I too am viewing US developments from abroad but I have come to believe that it’s lack of education and limited world view for a sizeable part of the US population. The über-wealthy need Trump to do their bidding so they can maintain/increase their wealth/power (remember, Trump is easily manipulated), combined with a large swath of narrowly-educated MAGA base that has felt like (or been treated as) second-class citizens and sees Trump as their “savior” (hence the link with “faith”). There are a few folks in-between, but they mostly jump on the band wagon. The other half of the US population represents a more moderate middle-class, educated to some degree and aware of a greater world beyond US borders. They’re burdened to some extent by woke-freaks, but every faction suffers from extremists. Considering the general deterioration of US educational standards over the past several decades (albeit with a wide standard deviation), a dystopian threat is very real indeed.

We live in THIS country and feel the same sense of shock and disbelief as anyone watching from the outside. Most of us have people in our lives we once looked on with respect but now just shake our heads as we move on. It is awful.
