In August 2023, scientists found a live 8cm (3in) worm living in the brain of an Australian woman. The woman experienced symptoms such as stomach pain, coughing, and night sweats for several months. These symptoms eventually progressed to include memory loss and depression. She was admitted to the hospital in late January 2021, and a scan later revealed an "atypical lesion within the right frontal lobe of the brain." The lesion turned out to be a worm. This case is thought to be the first known instance of a larvae infestation and development in a human brain.
