The shark wasn’t dead, it was just in a state called tonic immobility. It occurs when a shark is rotated onto its back. When they enter this state, they become paralyzed, slow their breathing, and relax their muscles. Divers often initiate this to prevent shark attacks.

When sharks are flipped upside down, they can enter a state called 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, appearing dead but actually fully alive. This natural paralysis is temporary and often used as a defense mechanism. Researchers sometimes induce it to safely study or tag sharks. Once flipped back, the shark quickly regains mobility. Though it seems lifeless, the shark is only temporarily immobilized and will return to normal behavior shortly.
