What these comments miss is that a crowd pumped up by chants calling for death to the IDF may well set off to pogrom any Jews it can find. That may not sound logical but expecting a mob to analyze with academic precision the meaning of a violent slogan chanted by their favorite musician goes against everything we know about the dynamics of mass violence. I can guarantee you that no visible Jew would have felt comfortable anywhere in the vicinity of that performance. Jews know in their guts that pogromist crowds aren’t guided by rational considerations. This is the kind of thing, by the way, that’s completely self-evident in cases of other groups. During the Rwandan genocide, Radio Rwanda spoke of “cockroaches” and “snakes” and encouraged people to “cut down the tall trees.” Strange how the genocidaires went after a specific group of Rwandans rather than insects and plants isn’t it. Tutsi survivors also recall how, in the run-up to the genocide, “political slogans were translated into song and young people were mobilized into youth movements. These youth movements were key to executing the genocide.” During the genocide, “the radio played music the militiamen could dance to as they killed.” Why do so many easily grasp the dynamics of violent incitement when it comes to others but refuse to see them when it comes to Jews? Rhetorical question, but some people should really think about it.

I'm likely going to stop paying for this app. Long before Twitter was acquired, I was verified for my work and activism. I earned every single one of my 40K followers. I engaged. I conversed. I shared. I learned. I loved it here. Today, the people with the most RT and likes are vile antisemities. They actually earn money by spreading hate and blood libels. It's insane what is allowed to be posted here and how much good content goes unshared. I'm sad. I really loved this app. But I can't feed a beast that thrives off of hate. I can't support an algorithm that rewards sensationalism and punishes thought. I can't cheapen myself for likes and shares. Maybe my audience will shrink and maybe my engagement will get lower, but at least I'll be true to myself and I won't be feeding the beast. I hope you stay with me - blue check or not.
