At 26, I was at IBM’s National Marketing Division headquarters in Atlanta, where I sat through and gave more projector presentations than I could possibly count. So what immediately jumped out at me was: Why is Erika standing in the projector beam? 😳 Projectors 101: 1. Don’t stand in the beam. 2. Don’t blind yourself. 3. Don’t block what your audience is trying to see. Apparently somebody forgot to give 26-year-old Erika the memo. Seriously, you might accidentally step into the beam, but you immediately step back out. Yet Erika stays planted there with the presentation projected across her face and body. 😬 Maybe Erika simply lacked presentation experience. Fine, she was 26. But nobody corrected her? And the director filmed it and left it in the documentary? Or was it intentional? Did somebody think, “This will look cool on camera”? If so, it had the opposite effect on me. Given the seriousness of the subject matter, it made the presentation clip with Erika look amateurish and unprofessional. Or maybe all that “In Search of Excellence” at IBM had too much influence on me. 😎

Threats: "Cyber, Hackers, " Aren't those the same category?

Okay, now you're in my wheelhouse. 😎 I spent 25+ years in InfoSec, privacy and risk, and I was an auditor too. That probably explains why anomalies, big or small, jump out at me. You caught something, but I think it's actually stranger than simple redundancy. “Cyber” and “hackers” aren't the same category. That's the problem. “Cyber” describes a domain of attack. “Hackers” describes threat actors. So if a hacker conducts a cyberattack against the grid, which of Erika's first two “major threats” does it belong under? Both. Then #3 is “physical threats,” another domain of attack. Now we're mixing WHO might attack with HOW an attack might occur. Then #4 is “solar EMP,” which introduces a natural hazard. More precisely, severe solar activity can produce a geomagnetic disturbance (GMD) capable of affecting the electric grid. Then #5 is man-made EMP, a specific human-caused hazard or attack mechanism. So the list mixes different dimensions of risk: threat actors, attack domains and natural or man-made hazards, presenting them as though they're five equivalent categories. They're not. Why does that matter? Because overlapping categories can obscure relationships between threats and make risks harder to analyze consistently. A structured risk assessment separates those dimensions. You identify threat sources and the threat events they can produce, identify vulnerabilities that could be affected or exploited, and evaluate likelihood and potential impact to determine risk. There's another terminology issue: Erika then calls this a “risk analysis.” What she's presented here is a threat list. Threat identification is part of risk analysis, but it isn't the analysis itself. I haven't watched the entire documentary, only the material you've posted, so I'm limiting my comments to what I've actually seen. But I thought part of documentary filmmaking was researching unfamiliar subject matter well enough to get the details right, especially when your subject says this material was presented to congressional officials. First the projector. Then the threat taxonomy. Now a threat list called a risk analysis. Okay, Patrea. Strike three. And somewhere Patrea is wondering why she let an auditor watch her documentary. 😂
