On today's show we remembered Jesse Jackson's legacy, particularly on the matter of the Democratic Party and abortion. In 1973, Jesse Jackson called abortion a "genocide." In 1977, he compared it to slavery, as an act that strips the vulnerable of their basic humanity. He declared that "as a matter of conscience I must oppose the use of federal funds for a policy of killing infants." He spoke at the March for Life. But in the 1980s, as a presidential candidate, Jackson reversed course. He called himself "pro-choice." He stopped talking about his mother's decision not to abort him, and embraced federal funding of abortions. His reversal would be regrettable no matter what, but from an ordained Christian minister it was particularly indefensible. In the 1980s, the partisan lines over abortion were not as rigid as today. Jackson was one of the most famous left-wing political figures in the country in the 1980s, and did a huge amount to shape the party as it is today. One wonders how history might have changed if Jackson, at the height of his influence, had been a braver man and a better Christian on the life issue.
