You know, we really use the word caliber incorrectly. Caliber is the length of a rifle barrel as a ratio of the diameter of the projectile. So for example in naval artillery the best caliber is 50. But 50 calibers means the rifle is 50x longer than the diameter of the gun. All of the best guns were 50 calibers in length, but the diameter varies from 5" to 16" Caliber is a ratio, but it turned into only the first part of that ratio which is diameter in inches. A 16" AR-15 would actually be a 71.4 caliber rifle.
