My thoughts are that dates/dating is supposed to be about getting to know the person you're potentially going to start a relationship with. The enviornment in which you get to know each other should not matter. Yet there are a lot of people soley focused on the meal, venue, etc..

A date is when the dude pays because he asked you out… going out to eat means pay for yourself like family & friends if he wasn’t gonna eat he should’ve picked a different setting & all they had to say was say separate bills in the beginning & she had her own money so he overreacted and probably overpaid if it was less then 100$
