Explanation. Flight routes sometimes don't make sense however, they are practically the best routes when you take into consideration the payload capacity of the aircraft. Specifically fuel. There's a weight requirement for aircrafts during landing and it for safety reasons.

I remember my primary teacher told us when the plane starts it needs to fly over a water(sea) or a plan area (could be a forest) , so that incase there is faults with the plane then it doesn't fall on civilian but either in sea or the forest . Guess he was right
