real

Manager: We lost our best engineer today. CEO: The one leading payments? Manager: Yes. CEO: Did another company offer more money? Manager: No. CEO: Then why leave? ↓ Manager: He said he was tired of fixing the same production issues every week. CEO: That’s part of the job. Manager: He didn’t mind fixing issues. He minded that nobody wanted to fix the root cause. CEO: We prioritized speed. Manager: He wanted quality. CEO: So he left over that? Manager: He left because he felt like a firefighter, not an engineer. Good engineers don’t just want to solve problems. They want to eliminate them.

Yeah, pretty much. Folks learn quickly at the larger companies that its more important to look useful than actually be useful. Managers are always looking for people to delegate 99% of their job responsibilities. AI can't come soon enough where I'd rather a robot manager any day.

This is where I long to work, FAANG is overrated.

So real. enjoyed working at small companies, getting some great stuff done.

I worked with an ex-MS and it was like this. Guy pretty much useless, all he wanted to do was talk bullshit and ask others to do the BS ideas he came up with. Didn't last long. And eventually he was rehired by MS lmao

"Well if Brian comes back from college maybe."

"We are the headcount. Nobody else is coming." 😂😂

Literally none of this reminds me of a single Amazonian I've ever met.

A Senior Lead was laid off after 8 years. "It’s just a numbers game," they told him. He handed over his laptop, shook hands, and didn't say a word. Two hours later, the CEO realized that the "silent" developer was the only one with the encryption keys to the production database. The manager called him, expecting him to help for "the sake of the team."↓ He didn't pick up. He was already at the airport, starting a 3-month vacation. It wasn't a numbers game anymore. It was a "how much is your downtime worth" game. He eventually sent a quote for 10x his previous hourly rate as an independent contractor. The "numbers" finally made sense to him.

You had me at "sometimes a little product" 💀

I just assume faaaang means gay rbh

@BrianRoemmele

we need more content like this!

Not devops, but PE.

one month into full-time from internship and this is already accurate. processes that made sense at scale feel completely alien when you're building something from scratch

You're at least 4 people with 1 useless role which is the camera man

The accuracy is on point ☝️😂

he got fired for a reason

A lot of truth here!
