When an industry optimizes for one metric, it often breaks everything else. In factory farming, this creates compounding suffering. Lewis Bollard explains how trying to solve pig boredom opens a spiral of unintended consequences. “At each step, there is a new solution that can’t solve the fundamental underlying parts... show more

It's hard to grasp the scale of factory farming. Lewis Bollard described what he saw at one farm with 200,000 hens in battery cages (each hen crammed together with 4-6 other hens in a space the size of a microwave oven for years on end, unable to even flap their wings). Consider an alternative civilization where factory farming didn't exist. If we had just discovered that there was one farm treating 200,000 animals this way, it would be a moral emergency. But there are about 8 billion caged hens alive globally at any moment. Which means this one farm is literally just 1/40,000th of the suffering. And that's just for egg production. The whole episode isn't so dire - it discusses the science and economics of the meat industry. But I wanted to highlight this point because it is so easy to flinch away, and not notice how big and important this issue really is.

“The biggest problem that isn’t discussed enough is the fact that a lot of these NIL contracts are entirely one sided... Is it the NCAA’s fault? Yes. ‘Cause at every turn they beg somebody else to solve their problem for them.” Bomani breaks down the REAL problem with college sports

Naval Ravikant explains the importance of hiring high-agency people “[Hire] people who just solve problems without even being asked to solve the problem—they identify the problem, they go solve it, they don’t even necessarily have to update you every step of the way, they’re not asking silly questions, and they’re just coming up with solutions. Because building a startup is an infinite set of problems that are being thrown at you.” Video Source: AngelList

"What is P vs NP and how does it relate to human knowledge?" Avi Wigderson (Turing Award & Abel Prize winner): "In a very basic way, all the problems we want to solve are really NP problems. A subset of it is the problems we can solve. So the question of P versus NP is whether we can solve all the problems we want to solve, whether we can know everything we want to know. This is basically about the limits of our knowledge. You can think there is no limit to what we may want to know but I claim that essentially in any human endeavor, what people are searching for have the property that when a solution is found, it is easily recognized. NP are all problems that we can honestly say we really want to solve and P are those that we can solve. Whether they are equal is just the very fact that a solution can be easily recognized would imply that it can be efficiently found. That means that we can know everything we ever want to know, it's a fundamental question about human knowledge."

This is one of my favorite movie endings... It has a powerful lesson: "At some point, everything is going to go south on you...and you're gonna say 'this is it, this is how I end.' Now you can either accept that, or you can get to work. That's all it is, you just begin. You do the math. You solve one problem. Then you solve the next one. And the next. And if you solve enough problems, you get to come home." This is the beautiful thing about life: No matter where you are today—no matter how deep in the darkness—you are always just one good decision away from being in a better place tomorrow. You can always focus on that one decision—that one problem—in front of you. Don't worry about the hundreds or thousands of decisions that you still have to make to get to where you want to be—just focus on the next decision. Just begin. Solve one problem. Then solve the next one. And the next. "Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated." - Confucius

A genius idea to solve a problem nobody even noticed existed! 😲 Sometimes the smartest solutions are not about creating something completely new, but about looking at an everyday problem from a completely different angle. What looks simple at first can actually be a brilliant piece of thinking. The way this idea turns an overlooked problem into a practical solution is honestly impressive. 🤯👏 This is a perfect reminder that innovation doesn’t always have to be complicated. Sometimes, all it takes is observation, creativity, and the courage to try something nobody else thought of. The real question is… how did nobody think of this before? 😲🔥

ELON: SOMEONE HAS TO SOLVE ROCKET REUSABILITY — WHETHER IT’S SPACEX OR SOMEONE ELSE “The cost of the fuel and oxygen on a Falcon 9 is 0.3% of the cost of the rocket. So, it's a very tiny number. It's very similar to an airplane. How much does it cost to fuel up an airplane, and how much does it cost to buy an airplane? They're very different things. If humanity is ever to expand beyond Earth and establish a self-sustaining base on another planet, it's critical that we solve this problem. Whether it's SpaceX or someone else, someone has to solve the problem, and we can have a hundred-fold reduction in the cost of spaceflight. That's what SpaceX has been trying to do, and really that's been the goal since the beginning of the company. So far, I've not been very successful in that regard, but I think we have a handle on it. We've got a design that closes in the simulations. If we can build that thing, it should work.” Source: SXSW, March 2013

The lack of "feature design" is why so many products over time feel hollow or messy. This isn't visual design. This isn't architectural design. I thought that a short video lecture of what feature design is and a real case study of applying it in Ghostty would be helpful. Feature design is the planning step behind how you're going to solve one or more user problems with a product feature: what that feature looks like, how it feels, and not just how its going to tactically solve these specific problems, but how that solution is going to interface with the edges of other features that currently exist or are planned to exist in the future.

Naval Ravikant on the importance of hiring high-agency people Naval defines agency as: “People who just solve problems without even being asked to solve the problem—they identify the problem, they go solve it, they don’t even necessarily have to update you every step of the way, they’re not asking silly questions, and they’re just coming up with solutions.” He believes this is important because “building a startup is an infinite set of problems that are being thrown at you.” And there comes a day where you can’t even look at every problem your company is facing—let alone solve every one of them. He cites the Vinod Khosla aphorism: "The team you build is the company you build, not the plan you make.” And your ability to solve problems is based entirely on how many problem-solvers you have at your company. As Naval puts it: “If you have somebody who takes 10% of your time and management to solve problems, you can only have 10 of those people working with you. But if somebody takes 5%, you can have 20 of those people.” When building Airchat and AngelList, he thought of each team as a Navy Seal team: “Everyone is just really good at what they do. They know their job. They do it. They don’t complain. They’re not egotistical about it. And if they have to constantly be corrected, led around by the nose, you have to clean up after them, or you question their judgement, it’s not going to work out.”

A couple is frustrated because their neighbor’s fence is old, leaning, and full of broken boards. They ask the HOA to step in and require the neighbor to replace it, but the HOA responds that the neighbor isn’t obligated to do so. Not wanting to keep looking at a damaged fence, they decide to build a brand-new one right beside it on their own property. Ot’s a tough spot. On one hand, it feels unfair to shoulder the cost alone. On the other, sometimes peace of mind is worth more than proving a point. In neighborhoods, practicality often wins over principle. When shared boundaries become disagreements, is it better to keep fighting, or just solve the problem yourself?

JOE ROGAN: GOOGLE’S AI SOLVED AN IMPOSSIBLE EQUATION IN MINUTES Joe said Google’s AI achieved a staggering breakthrough by solving a problem that would take the world’s supercomputers billions of years. He said the calculation was so complex that even turning every atom in the universe into a computer wouldn’t have done it in time: “I believe it’s the Google one. They solved an equation that would take the world’s supercomputers, I think it was 2.6 billion years to solve, and it solved it in a matter of minutes. The only way for it to solve this problem, Marc Andreessen said it on my podcast, the equation is so difficult that if you took every atom in the universe and converted it to a supercomputer, the universe would die of heat death before it would solve this equation. And it solved it in minutes.” Source: Joe Rogan Jesse Michels

☝️ “Nowhere else in the world is there such a level of corruption as in Ukraine. I have communicated closely with former Ukrainian leaders — a bet is placed on everything: for a vote in the Supreme Court, for a vote in the Constitutional Court, a bet is placed. I heard from a top official of the state things like, "We solve this and that; it will cost this much." My jaw just dropped. I said, "Is it really like that?" And was told, "Yes, that's how we do it here."” - President Putin
