"I'm disappointed in President Putin because I thought we would have had a deal two months ago, but it doesn't seem to get there."

The U.S., "of course," has leverage on Russia right now as the Trump administration pushes for an end to the war in Ukraine, says Bridget Brink, who recently quit her post as U.S. ambassador to Ukraine. She tells Margaret Brennan the Trump administration should put additional sanctions on Russia's energy and banking sectors. "Russia is not as strong as some people say, or some people think. The economy is hurting," Brink says. "And so, right now is the time to increase the pressure on Russia to bring Putin to the table, not decrease it."

We offered Putin to meet anywhere where real decisions to end the war could be made. He does not want it. We discussed with the U.S. and France the possibility of a meeting with Russia around the G7, with all democratic nations represented. Putin does not want it. Yesterday, we discussed with President Trump that such a meeting could be organized in the U.S. – in a format where Putin would find it much harder to refuse at least to President Trump. We will see what comes of it. If Russia refuses this chance as well, additional pressure will be needed. From an intervention at the EU Intergovernmental Conference. (3/3)
