Today in Rock History May 6, 2018 E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame, with a surprise appearance by Bruce Springsteen, who said, “Though born in Boston, there is no purer distillation of the Jersey ethos than ‘Little’ Steven Van Zandt.” The evening concluded with Springsteen and Van Zandt performing “I Don’t Want to Go Home,” a song Van Zandt wrote for Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes.

It all started in Tampa back on February 1st 2023, when Bruce Springsteen and the Legendary E-Street Band finally made their triumphant return to the stage and began their world tour. I remember them hitting the stage and being emotional, realizing what we went through and how long we waited to get to see our hero's live once again. A tour that would have started much earlier, especially with the release of a brilliant album in Letter To You, but after a long pandemic, which at the time seemed like it would never end, much less see a concert, I remember feeling incredibly grateful and thankful that we were getting to experience and witness the greatest musician and the greatest band to ever grace a stage, rock us to the ground, like only they can. Bruce and the E-Street Band are the bar. Even in their 70s, there is no match. Yes, there are iconic and legendary bands still out there playing their music and entertaining their fans. But NO ONE delivers and does it like Bruce and the E-Street Band, consistently, with the heart and passion and yes even urgency like they do. Every show, they absolutely deliver. Even through periodic bouts of sickness with various band members, Bruce's ulcer, which even the night before he absolutely brought Met Life Stadium down with an insane performance, Stevie's appendicitis, NOTHING stopped the band from bringing their "A" game. When someone went down, someone else stepped up . Bruce and the band always made good on their promise not to guarantee life everlasting, but to guarantee life RIGHT NOW. Especially when many of us desperately needed it. And it's not just the E-Street Band alumni. The original E-Street Bands passion, dedication, commitment and professionalism is also embedded in every musician on that stage. The E-Street Horns, the E-Street Choir, Anthony Almonte, Ozzie Melendez, Curtis King Jr, Michelle Monique Moore, Curt Ramm, Lisa Lowell, Eddie Manion, Ada Dyer, and Barry Danielan, they brought it to us night after night, smiles, heart, sweat and tears. And they all clicked on all cylinders. To me they were just as important to the show as Bruce and the original E-Street Band was. They were essential and they were absolutely and always will be adored. They definitely earned their E Street Stripes. The Sea Hear Now show in Asbury Park was the highlight for me personally. And it wasn't just the jaw dropping setlist. Again it was a moment in history, Springsteen history, to be on the beach of Asbury Park, my home away from home, and feeling like I was actually standing in the songs that Bruce was singing about for years. It was my "Woodstock" moment. And I agree with Bruce's statement that it was one of the best shows the band has ever played. And that brings us to today. The culmination. For today in Milan, which will undoubtedly be an emotional and epic show, Bruce and the band will close out the Land Of Hope and Dreams tour, at least for this year. For all the ones attending this monumental show, enjoy every moment and take it all in. Most of all realize how blessed we all were to witness this incredible performer and band the last couple of years, and never take it for granted. Make no mistake. We were absolutely blessed to see these shows and to experience these amazing musicians. Bruce and the entire E-Street Band. THANK YOU for an unforgettable tour. Thank you for giving so much of yourselves not only on that stage, but even in public when you really didn't have to. Thank you for giving us hope and smiles. I'm pretty confident in saying that we all needed it. In these crazy times....It was through your love and through your music and entertainment... once again ....we definitely felt the Spirit... and yes once again... for those 3 hours when you were on that stage... yes.. we were ALIVE. “Johnny B. Goode” was originally released by Chuck Berry in 1958 and became one of the foundational anthems of rock and roll. In 1995, Berry performed the classic alongside Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at the inaugural concert celebrating the opening of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio. The performance brought together one of rock and roll's founding figures with one of the artists who had been deeply influenced by his music, creating a remarkable meeting between two generations of rock. The collaboration had an especially meaningful history behind it. More than two decades earlier, in 1973, a young Springsteen and his band had actually served as Berry's backing band at a concert at the University of Maryland's Cole Field House in College Park. Berry arrived without a rehearsal or soundcheck, leaving Springsteen and the band to improvise their way through a set of Berry classics. The 1995 performance therefore brought the two artists together again on a much larger stage, with Springsteen returning to the role of backing musician for one of his most important rock and roll influences.

Another clip from last night where Stevie talks about when he felt the E Street Band went from just another good band to becoming something really special. One of the best observations he made is when he said: "With Born to Run Bruce Springsteen made the major identity change. He made the decision from leaving town on Born to Run to deciding to stay on Darkness on the Edge of Town. The moment of fighting with your father then becoming your father." Today we celebrate the birthday of the Maestro! Professor Roy Bittan!! In my mind his contribution to Bruce’s music is immeasurable. His signature is all over all the major Springsteen classics. He has been labeled at times: Springsteen’s Secret Weapon”. And I definitely agree! Bruce : “Roy’s sound, beginning on Born to Run, is still the sound that many people relate to - along with Clarence [Clemons]’s sax - as the signature sound of the E Street Band.” To honor Roy, here is arguably (not really) the greatest outro to any Bruce Springsteen song ever!
