by taking the closest cone first, he was able to be always ahead of the other two when they're crossing the center/home, so he could maintain straight path each time.

It's not abt the distance covered, it will be the same no matter which order u choose to pick up those cones. It's abt the cone selection. Cesc picked the first cone which was not in a straight line of his run. Later he didn't slow down while picking up remaining 3 aligned cones.

The distance as the crow flies is always the shortest distance from point A to point B. He mostly maintained a linear movement.
