Not their origins.” He plots stories on 2 axes: X: Time Y: Good fortune / ill fortune He goes on to say, “Somebody gets into trouble, then gets out of it again. People love that story. They never get tired of it.” Point 1: Stories have defined patterns. In Joseph Campbell’s Hero of a Thousand Faces, he makes the case for the Hero’s Journey. Since then, it’s become the most famous storytelling structure in the world. Vonnegut argued stories could be divided into 8 shapes. Each story, he said, fit one of the 8. Point 2: Vonnegut says, “Be a sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them — so the reader may see what they're made of.” To see who your characters really are, you have to make them suffer. Only then does your audience have someone worth cheering for. Point 3: End on a high note. Vonnegut says, “It’s not accidental that the line ends up higher than where it began. This is encouraging to readers.” The way a story makes people feel when they finish is how they remember it. It’s called recency bias. Lift people up and they will love you. *** “There are people. Christopher Nolan says The Odyssey is a promise he made to himself at 16, watching a volcano documentary in a dome-screen IMAX in Chicago. Christopher Nolan: "Going to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago when I was 16 years old, seeing a documentary about volcanoes in the OmniMax format, and thinking... why on earth isn't Hollywood using this format? I always wanted to be a director. If I ever got the chance, could I shoot a film in this way?" Christopher Nolan: "I called my friends at IMAX and said, look... if ever we're going to make a film entirely on IMAX, this is The Odyssey. This is the one. Can you find a way to alleviate the limiting factor? The cameras are extremely loud." Christopher Nolan: "What they did is they came up with a way of blimping the camera... a high-tech box that silences it. The thing weighed about 300 pounds. But it let us, for the first time ever, get the quiet scenes, the dramatic scenes, and therefore do the whole film."

Christopher Nolan’s next film is only 63 days away but the doubters are out in full force- you can hear them from miles away. I’d like to offer an olive branch to those questioning Nolan in this moment: there’s still time for you to reverse course & stop doubting Nolan. I’m truly surprised by how many have suggested that The Odyssey could be a full-blown failure. The “bust potential” conversations around this film are growing, albeit needlessly. Many have criticized Nolan’s casting decisions & creative decisions- without even seeing the film. This is all without mentioning that Nolan just won multiple Oscars- he just gave us an immediate classic with Oppenheimer. Doesn’t that mean he gets the benefit of the doubt? Shouldn’t people hold their reservations until they see Nolan’s vision through? It doesn’t make any sense to me. Let this be a line of demarcation. 63 days out from The Odyssey, if you’re one of those folks doubting/questioning Nolan, this might be one of your last chance to be on the right side of history when Nolan drops another classic.

The connection between Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" (2014) & Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" (2014): Christopher Nolan’s father died in 2009, after a year-long battle with cancer that was diagnosed just as he was finishing 'Inception' (2010), and as Jonathan Nolan was starting to write 'Interstellar' (2014). His father’s diagnosis was very much in his mind, Jonathan Nolan said, “the connection that you have with your parents. It was the background to much of it.” Christopher Nolan himself sees 'Interstellar' more in terms of his relationship with his own children – Rory, Magnus, Oliver and Flora – all of whom have given him the working titles for the last four of his movies. The Dark Knight was “Rory’s First Kiss”, Inception was “Oliver’s Arrow”, The Dark Knight Rises was “Magnus Rex”, and Interstellar was “Flora’s Letter”. The need to be away from them while filming eats at him. “There is a lot of guilt for that. A lot of guilt. Nolan’s Odyssey is so close to being great. Here’s my spoiler review after just having reread Homer’s Odyssey. First off, the good: the look and feel of the film is incredible. But the greatest accomplishment must be the pacing. Nolan managed to follow the in media res structure, include (most) of the big episodes, without any of it feeling rushed. I particularly like how he combined many scenes (e.g. Calypso, lotus eaters, and Phaeacians) into one. If he had just avoided these three mistakes this would’ve been legendary: 1. Odysseus is Overly Moralized 2. Deception is Underutilized 3. Racially-Mixed Ithacans Breaks Immersion (it’s not just black Helen of Troy but the mixed White/Black/Indian/Chinese crew of Odysseus that subverts a key premise of the story) Each of these contributes to a lack of mystery in the film. I elaborate on each of the points below (spoilers).

🖤 WOW! Another amazing friend of Nolan Wells speaks: Tracestin Shepherd. I’ll call him T. With Brandon Tatum Part 5: 🖤 Mom said this wasn’t one of Nolan’s close friends (yet again), yet he parked cars at Nolan’s house for weeks, spent Spring Break with him, and traveled with him. 🖤 The beach fight. T got into a fight after a man inserted himself into him and his girlfriend’s discussion, took a swing at T, and the 2 fought. Later, Warren’s younger brother, Carter, got into a separate one-on-one fight with that SAME man. Nolan was not part of the fight. 🖤 It makes me wonder if Nolan was targeted later because he was with this friend group—or if that same man later inserted himself into Nolan’s conversation with Katie. 🖤 No obvious signs of a fight, THOUGH, per ME. Only the red discoloration on the back of Nolan’s neck, and part of his neck is still being retained by the first medical examiner. There could be medical explanations, but a couple of my guy friends wondered if maybe Nolan had been choked out. 🖤 Last sighting by T: Nolan and Katie were walking toward Wyatt’s boat while T headed to his uncle’s boat. T didn’t say Nolan was getting on the boat or leaving. Katie remains part of the timeline. 🖤 T says the “Give me my effing phone” voice is his, not Nolan’s. Nolan’s coach also said it wasn’t Nolan’s voice. 🖤 T said they searched with Wyatt the next day. I wish he’d said which boat. I’m assuming the 18-foot Palm Beach, since the 22-footer reportedly had water issues—but that’s only my assumption. Lastly, why aren’t we considering that Nolan may have gotten onto someone else’s boat and something happened there? Or that he simply got himself into trouble in the water? What if, under the influence of alcohol, he was injured and tried swimming to shore? Is that why he was found face down? Maybe he drank too much and suffered alcohol poisoning. To me that's why he's so creepy, because he's a very ordinary guy who's crossed this line and he's trying to figure out where that's going to take him, I've seen his performance in this movie, one way or another, thousands of times at this point, and it's totally real. It absolutely stands up to multiple viewings. Most performances don't. Most performances, after you've watched them and watched them and watched them, you start to see the tricks. It starts to get stale. Interviewer: What isn't ordinary about the character is that his mind is so meticulous. Watching Williams, you get the sense that everything he does is premeditated, even when he's winging it. Nolan: Right. but if you watch the film again, if you step outside Pacino's perception of the situation, he's not as sharp as you think he is. Al is progressively strung out. He's missing things. Interviewer: So was it hard to get such a reserved performance out of the famously hyperactive Williams? Nolan: I didn't find it so, to be quite honest. From my conversation with Will Storr: I was watching the latest Mission Impossible movie and realized the plot was so convoluted it made no sense. And yet, the theater was packed. Everyone was glued to their seats. Part of the appeal is the spectacle—Tom Cruise, in his 60s, doing wild stunts. But what stood out to me is that, at this point, we don’t care much about the plot. We care about Ethan Hunt—and about Tom Cruise playing him. We like him, and we’re just following him through these escalating challenges. Afterward, I thought of something from your book, Will. You argue that character is more important than plot. Can you say more about that? Will Storr: Yeah, that’s central to The Science of Storytelling. It’s about how we can tell better stories by understanding the brain as a storytelling machine. Most traditional guides—like those inspired by Joseph Campbell—focus on plot structure. They break stories into templates: this happens, then that happens. That’s where you get things like the Hero’s Journey. But I wanted to begin with how the mind works. We’re deeply social creatures. Our greatest threats and opportunities are other people, so we’ve evolved to be fascinated by the inner lives of others. That’s why character matters. We’re endlessly curious about what’s really going on inside people. It’s why gossip is universal—one study found it makes up 60% of our conversations, across genders. So I’m not saying character instead of plot, but that great plots often grow out of great characters. Who someone is shapes what they want, the problems they face, and how they respond.
