@blewy214 He should have been given a role when the local rights went to 7. Better than Brayshaw and the equal of Lane as a cricket caller

When Shane Warne came out of ODI retirement for tsunami relief in 2005, it was a special moment. Returning to the field after his 2002 shoulder injury at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Warne donned his bowling cap in an ODI for the first time in years and was greeted with a massive ovation from his home crowd. #FlashbackFriday

Summer 1993 and it's time for the first ball in Test cricket in England from Shane Warne. He's bowling to a great player of spin in Mike Gatting though and he got tonked everywhere in the warm up game so I don't expect anything will happen.

“There are lots of reasons I don’t like Steve Waugh ... (one of them) because he’s the most selfish cricketer I’ve played with.” #ThrowbackThursday Shane Warne openly discussed the long-standing tension between him and Steve Waugh during his appearance on ‘I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here’. The legendary leg-spinner, who had been passed over for the Australian captaincy in favor of Waugh, shared new insights into what fueled their disagreement. Warne was enraged after being left out of a crucial 1999 Test in the West Indies. Waugh made the call following Warne’s poor performance in the previous match. Recovering from shoulder surgery, Warne felt fit to play but was instead made the “scapegoat.” Australia went on to win that final Test by 176 runs.

Come on, Come on! The ball that changed the course of the match. South Africa were cruising at 48-0 at the end of 12th over. Enters Warne, wicket off 2nd ball of his 2nd over (Gibbs: 30 off 36). Then Kirsten & Cronje, Warne 3-2-3-3 Warne's final figures 10-4-29-4 Steve Waugh - Warne was so fired up and animated that it took a wall of players to stifle his forward thrust. His drive and will were literally scary, but he sparked life into others who were tensing up under the South African onslaught and got us back into the game.” #OnThisDay in 1999

Happy Birthday Mark Waugh Mark Waugh was one of cricket’s most elegant stroke-makers, renowned for his effortless drives, cuts and pulls. A prolific performer for New South Wales, he made a century on Test debut in 1991 and went on to become a key member of Australia’s dominant side. His career highlights included three World Cup centuries in 1996, a match-winning 126 in the West Indies in 1995, and a world-record 464-run partnership with his twin brother Steve. An outstanding fielder and useful part-time bowler, Waugh retired from international cricket in 2002 after a distinguished career marked by style, flair and remarkable natural talent.

When Australia ended West Indies’ 15-year dominance. #OnThisDay in 1995, Australia became the first side in 15 years to defeat West Indies in a Test series - a moment that marked a seismic shift in world cricket. The Australian players celebrated the historic triumph late into the night, but for Steve Waugh, the emotion ran deeper. He famously went to sleep still wearing his whites, socks, and baggy green cap - a reflection of just how much the victory meant to him. That win in Jamaica wasn’t just a series result; it signalled the beginning of a new era for Australian cricket. It was also a defining chapter in Waugh’s career, as his resilience and match-winning 200 became one of the cornerstones of his enduring legacy.

“Probably one of my best innings under pressure.” ~ Steve Waugh Steve Waugh’s Defiant Farewell! In 2003, Ashes were already won, but Steve Waugh’s place in the side was under scrutiny (Selectors had gone public saying they could offer him no guarantee, and he had done little in the series till then apart from making two fifties). Chasing 362 at 56 for 3, he played a typically composed innings, reaching 47 by the final drinks break. With a century suddenly within reach, Waugh faced Richard Dawson in the final over, needing five runs. After three dot balls and a single, Waugh smashed the next delivery through cover for four to bring up a remarkable century. Australia lost the Test, but Waugh had delivered an innings that allowed him to decide the terms of his own retirement. #FlashbackFriday

In the first excerpt from my interview for The Root with Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani, I ask how his African origins informed his worldview. (His was born in Uganda, moved to South Africa when he was five, before coming to the U.S. when he was seven.) He says, “I’m so proud to be a son of Africa.” You can watch the full interview on Youtube. #zohranmamdani

Steve Waugh 🗣️: People always say to me, "What's the secret to success?" and it's always the same answer: hard work. You look at Shane Warne, one of the greatest bowlers of all time. He worked harder than anyone else on his bowling. He was always analyzing it, practicing it. And I remember one story: Carl Hooper took him apart in a test match in Barbados on the first day of the series, turning wicket. He was just randomly charging him and putting him over cover and mid-wicket. We thought that was really strange, like, "How did you do that?" So, Warne went home that night and got the tapes of the day's play and went through them. And when Carl Hooper was tapping his bat in his normal stance, he was going to play like a conservative normal shot, either forward or back. But there was other occasions where he didn't tap his bat and his bat was up in the air, and that was the balls he was going to charge. So, the next day, as soon as he saw no tapping, he threw it out wide and stumped him. So that's an example of, you know, someone looking for that 1 or 2 percent difference that makes him a great player.

Happy Birthday Tim May His highest Test score and best bowling performance came in the same match. After claiming 5 for 9 against the West Indies a day before his birthday, he followed it up with a valiant 42 not out, narrowly missing the chance to become a national hero in his first Test appearance in four years. He forged a formidable bowling partnership with Shane Warne between 1993 and 1995, a period that marked a remarkable resurgence in his career, highlighted by the memorable Adelaide Test. Featuring together in 17 Test matches, the duo proved devastatingly effective, claiming ten or more wickets in an innings on eight occasions.
