Supposedly, poor red states are still just as rich as most European countries. How come they can't finance their schools properly? And could the test results be more dependent on demographic factors than on finances? Test results are abysmal in certain schools in California, too.

America's education system, or lack thereof, is the main reason we have this mess now. Stupid is institutionalized.

Funding does not come from the DOE, it comes from Taxes and the DOE is nothing more than a funnel to pass on the taxes. So there is no use for the DOE, the funds can go without them. Then consider the US was #1 in education the year DOE was formed. Where are we now?
