Boris Johnson: Putin radiates something Gollum-like. He's spooky, very small, and pretends not to speak English when he speaks it damn well. He's behaving like Gollum towards Ukraine. He's got an obsession. It's tragic.

Bilbo survived the Ring because he spared Gollum's life Sixty years he carried it, and it barely marked him. Not because he was strong. Because of one choice he made the day he found it: he had Gollum at his mercy, and he let him live. Gandalf says that pity is the whole reason the Ring took so little of him Gollum got the Ring the opposite way. He murdered for it. And it devoured him for five hundred years. That's the rule underneath Tolkien's world. The Ring doesn't corrupt you based on how strong you are. It corrupts you based on how you came to hold it

Happy 45th birthday Elijah Wood who had the incredible task of carrying the weight of an enormous trilogy on his back at the age of 18 years old! My favourite scene of Frodo is our introduction to both Frodo and Gandalf in the Shire in The Fellowship of the Ring

The scene of Frodo, Sam, and Gollum passing Minas Morgul was moved to The Return of the King in the films, even though in Tolkien’s The Two Towers it happens earlier. Peter Jackson shifted it because the moment works better as a tense buildup toward the final act Frodo standing on the edge of Mordor, the Witch-king’s army marching to war, and the narrative intensity before Shelob’s Lair. In The Two Towers (the book), the passage is far darker and more supernatural. As they enter the Morgul Vale, all three feel the sickening dread of the place, but Frodo is nearly overwhelmed almost “claimed” by the evil radiating from the city. When Minas Morgul erupts in its corpse-green light, Frodo is drawn toward the gate under a hypnotic spell, and Sam has to pull him back. The Witch-king then leads a massive army out of the city far larger and more terrifying than in the movie. Frodo once again nearly puts on the Ring as the host marches past. Importantly, in the book they never go near the gate. They hide beneath a ledge as the army passes, then slip away and begin the climb toward Cirith Ungol along Gollum’s secret path.

One of the biggest changes Peter Jackson made to The Fellowship of the Ring was how Frodo left the Shire. In the film, Gandalf discovers the Ring is the One Ring and immediately urges Frodo to leave. The danger is imminent, so Frodo departs Hobbiton the next day with Samwise alone. The book is very different. After Gandalf confirms the Ring’s true identity, Frodo remains in the Shire for about five months. To avoid suspicion, he sells Bag End to the Sackville-Bagginses (Otho missed out 🤣) and spreads the story that he is moving to a small house in Buckland. It looks like an ordinary move rather than a sudden disappearance. In the book, it is presented as a slow-burning shadow creeping across the Shire, while Jackson turns it into an urgent race against time from the beginning.

The scene where Sauron learns the location of the One Ring in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was far longer than the film suggests. It took eight years before Gollum finally revealed the Ring's whereabouts after enduring Sauron's torture. After Gollum finally broke under torture and whispered the names "Shire" and "Baggins," Sauron released him, hoping the creature would eventually lead his servants to the One Ring. The Dark Lord then dispatched the Nazgûl from Minas Morgul and Dol Guldur. Crossing the River Anduin to obtain horses and advancing in complete secrecy, the Nine Riders embarked on a long and perilous mission across Eriador in search of the One Ring - far more extensive than the brief sequence shown in the film.

The Return of the King 1980 vs 2003 - The End of Gollum and the Ring. 🎬 Some Lord of the Rings fans only know Gollum’s fall from Peter Jackson’s film, but it’s told differently in the Return of the King book. Gollum finally takes the Ring by biting Frodo’s finger, celebrates with a victory dance, and then falls into the fire. The 1980 animated adaptation stays closer to the book, showing the moment as Tolkien wrote it. Which version do you think was better?

The lyrics of the Elvish song that plays right after Aragorn says ‘For Frodo!’ The piece directly callbacks the exact words of the unbreakable oath Aragorn swore to Frodo in The Fellowship of the Ring: "If by my life or death I can protect you, I will. You have my sword.

One of the most powerful musical details in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King comes right after Aragorn says “For Frodo!” The choir sings in Sindarin, and the lyrics directly echo the promise Aragorn made to Frodo in The Fellowship of the Ring: “If by my life or death I can protect you, I will. You have my sword.” Years later, Aragorn keeps that promise. He leads the charge knowing they are massively outnumbered, giving Frodo the chance to reach Mount Doom. Howard Shore’s “For Frodo” makes that moment even more powerful by musically bringing Aragorn’s old promise back at the exact moment he fulfills it
