It is not all the way there, but as someone who builds educational simulations, I can tell you this is already impressively far along towards an effective teaching tool. This is a long tweet - but its worth a read - Reform UK’s Dr David Bull talking about family and whether parents should stay at home to look after their children: “You want to support marriage through the tax system and make it easier for parents to stay at home to look after their children - what's the reason behind that?” Dr David Bull: We believe that children do better in stable relationships across the board. And actually we need to encourage that. In marriage you think? Dr Bull: In marriage, and that marriage is an important bond, isn't it? Because I think what children desperately need is someone at home, and they need someone to be there and support them during that education. So we think that's a cornerstone, actually. And one of the things that I find really strange and very difficult to understand is the disconnect that children now have, because when you come home, you want to be able to offload what's been going on at school, and you need someone at home to be able to do that. And if we can incentivise that through tax breaks that has to be a good thing. Do you think if you're a child with two working parents, that's not a great upbringing for you? 𝐴𝑛 𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑛 𝑎𝑝𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑦 𝑡𝑜 Alabama Men’s Basketball I want to apologize to a program that I have loved and embraced starting as a 12-year-old who became drawn to the sport by the greatness of Ennis Whatley. I want to apologize to all the former players, coaches, staff and fans who also share my passion for Alabama basketball. I want to apologize for almost losing faith, and today on Easter Sunday this seems the most appropriate time to ask for your forgiveness. I never stopped supporting every coach, every player and every season, but there were many times I questioned why the second-winningest program in the conference seemed sentenced to wander in college basketball purgatory. During those barren seasons of more than a decade with only one NCAA Tournament appearance, and a quick one at that, my crisis of faith occurred. I truly felt a once-proud program had become an afterthought, and in that brief moment I almost accepted that I would never see the Crimson Tide reach the Final Four in my lifetime. I had become numb to the mediocrity and I didn’t expect more. I had forgotten what the program could be, and actually achieved, when I grew up in the 80s and graduated from The University of Alabama in the early 90s. I wanted to take time to process the significance of last night’s 89-82 victory over Clemson in the very appropriate City of Angels. The basketball gods, who I cursed after every mis-seeding by the NCAA selection committee, after every unexpected postseason injury and after every agonizing loss in the Sweet Sixteen, knew. They knew a team and staff assembled together out of necessity but embracing “mudita” would be the one. They knew a team questioned about its physicality, about its defense, would be the one. They knew when the rest of the country laughed at Alabama and many penciled them as opening-round losers would be the one. They knew a team that ignores the criticism and puts its faith in themselves and the process would be the one. They knew this team would be the one. The one to offer salvation to a long-suffering fanbase that had paid its penance across all generations (Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials). Thank you 2023-24 for being THE one. Thank you Mark Sears for coming back to your home state. Thank you Rylan Griffen for signing with Alabama out of high school and staying for another season. Thank you Grant Nelson, Aaron Estrada, Latrell Wrightsell and Mohamed Wague for seeing something in Alabama. Thank you Nick Pringle for your fiery emotion and your gritty play last night with a bruised heel. Thank you Jarin Stevenson for sacrificing your senior year of high school and choosing Alabama over your home state Tar Heels. Scientists Reveal a Simple Technique to Communicate With Your Cat | Michelle Starr, ScienceAlert Cats have a reputation for aloofness (and floofiness), but if you and your feline friend aren't bonding, the problem might just be that you're not speaking their language. Never fear – research shows it's easier than you think. All you need to do is smile at them more – cat style. Not in the human way, by showing your teeth, but by narrowing your eyes and blinking slowly. By observing cat-human interactions in 2020, scientists confirmed that this simple gesture makes cats – both familiar and strange – more likely to approach and engage with humans. "As someone who has both studied animal behavior and is a cat owner, it's great to be able to show that cats and humans can communicate in this way," University of Sussex psychologist Karen McComb said when the study was published. "It's something that many cat owners had already suspected, so it's exciting to have found evidence for it." ... If you've spent any time around cats, you've probably seen their 'partially closed eyes' facial expressions, accompanied by slow blinking. It's similar to how human eyes narrow when smiling and usually occurs when the cat is relaxed and content. The expression is interpreted as a kind of cat smile. The results showed that cats are more likely to slow blink at their humans after their humans have slow blinked at them, compared to the no-interaction condition. The second experiment included 24 cats from eight different households. This time, it wasn't the owners doing the blinking but the researchers, who'd had no prior contact with the cat. For a control, the cats were recorded responding to a no-blink condition, in which humans stared at the cats without blinking their eyes. The researchers performed the same slow-blink process as the first experiment, adding an extended hand toward the cat. And they found that not only were the cats more likely to blink back, but they were also more likely to approach the human's hand after the human blinked. "This study is the first to experimentally investigate the role of slow blinking in cat-human communication," McComb said. "And it is something you can try yourself with your own cat at home or with cats you meet in the street. It's a great way of enhancing the bond you have with cats. Try narrowing your eyes at them as you would in a relaxed smile, followed by closing your eyes for a couple of seconds. This is a little different from the “uncanny valley” phenomenon, where human-like robots evoke fear through subtle unnaturalness, but what I aimed for was a mismatch in perception and a betrayal of expectations. It shakes the player’s assumption of how a machine is “supposed” to look, creating a visceral discomfort. It’s not human, yet its abnormal condition creates a gap, one that I thought could evoke eeriness and fear. …But looking at Jupiter King’s crooked posture again after all this time, it doesn’t look frightening. It just looks clumsy. How embarrassing…😅 The other day, while listening to Akiman-san’s TwitCasting stream where he talked about “Cyborg No. 1,” I remembered something. I had once asked the junior in charge of animating this boss for a favor: to draw the inside of “Cyborg No. 1” within the wreckage that appears after the boss is defeated in a huge explosion. Some of you may remember the clear-bodied dress-up action figures “Henshin Cyborg 1” sold by Takara around 1970. In fact, I myself had completely forgotten that I had hidden such a playful touch in the boss’s wreckage. Warren Buffett on the Benjamin Franklin thought exercise anyone can use to be successful Warren Buffett offers the following advice to the students at the Terry College of Business: “Pretend I’ve made you a great offer: You can pick any one of your classmates and you get 10% of their earnings for the rest of their lives. What goes through your mind in determining who you would pick?” He continues: “You probably wouldn’t pick the person who gets the highest grades in the class. There’s nothing wrong with getting the highest grades, but that’s not going to be the quality that sets apart a big winner from the rest of the pack… I think you’ll find that it gets down to a bunch of qualities that, interestingly enough, are self-made… It’s integrity, it’s honesty, it’s generosity, it’s being willing to do more than your share.” Then he asks the class to pick a classmate to sell short: “Who do you think is going to do the worst in the class? It isn’t the person with the lowest grades, or anything of the sort. It’s the person who just doesn’t shape up in the character department.” When Berkshire Hathaway hires people, they look for three things: 1. Intelligence 2. Initiative or Energy 3. Integrity Buffett explains: “If they don’t have the latter, the first two will kill you. If you’re going to hire somebody without integrity, you want them lazy and dumb. You don’t want them smart and energetic.” Importantly, he points out that these are habit patterns: “The person who always claims credit for things they didn’t do, cuts corners, and who you can’t count on — in the end, those are habit patterns. And the time to form the right habits is when you’re your age… Someone once said that the chains of habit are too light to be felt until they’re too heavy to be broken. And I see that all the time.” Buffett concludes: “When you write down the habits of that person you’d like to buy 10% of, look at that list and ask yourself, ‘Is there anything on that list that I couldn’t do?’ And the answer is that there won’t be. And when you look at the person you sell short and you look at the qualities you don’t like — if you see any of those in yourself (egotism, selfishness), you can get rid of that.
