When I learned about the Samavartana ceremony in ancient India while researching on India's educational heritage, I was simply mindblown by the verses from Shikshavalli in Taittiriya Upanishad that were chanted. And I thought why the hell are we not chanting these very verses when students graduate today? So... much meaning, so much depth! But then I realized this ceremony was designed for Brahmacharis who have led a life designed for learning deep truths. Imagine a graduation ceremony culminating in a sacred bath for the student! All the same it made me feel good to see IIT Delhi including these chants at their recent convocation. We are still far from decolonization but perhaps even the symbolism of a timeless ceremony should be appreciated. More than anything it is fun to see the leftists frothing at the mouth over the 'Hindu' chants at an IIT convocation.show more

this is why 7 is sevEN 🤍 🐈: honestly, i think this was the first time we attended an awards ceremony with one member missing… was it because of jay hyung’s knee back then? at that time for music core and the previous concert before when jay hyung couldn’t participate… but this is the first time we couldn’t do an awards show like that. it definitely felt empty. 🐈: i didn’t think we would feel the difference that much going from seven members to six, but it was more noticeable than i expected 🥹

#SEONGHWA about walking the runway for SONGZIO today 🩶 ⭐️: Anyway, what I really wanted to say today is that, honestly, walking the runway has always felt like a dream to me. And now, counting this time I’ve done it three times in total, now twice with SONGZIO, which is a brand I really lov, so it made this an even more meaningful time for me. It was such a meaningful experience. While getting ready backstage, all the models were just incredibly cool.. really, so cool. Seeing them gave me a lot of courage and watching how the staff worked was very inspiring as well. In a way it kind of reminded me of ATEEZ in our earlier days, everyone felt close like a family and it was really nice to see. Yes, I learned a lot and felt a lot through this experience. Last time I was only focused on the runway itself, but this time I think I was able to see things more broadly. I think I saw the whole thing with a broader perspective, I learned and felt things. It was truly so much fun. And in those moments I really felt like I was the main character, I really had fun. Originally, during rehearsal, I was second to last. But the CEO started at the very end, and after I finished, I was waiting like this and I was supposed to go in around the final turn. Then suddenly, he changed the positions. So, unexpectedly, I ended up even doing the finale, and it felt so thrilling. At the same time though I worried whether I might somehow be kind of a burden among such amazing models so that (thought) made me study and practice even more. Even though I personally feel there are still many ways I’m lacking, I also found myself thinking that maybe I was able to be part of the story these people were writing through fashion. This has very special meaning to me: in the lobby of our hotel in Changchun, we just saw two of the original drums that were used for the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Watching that opening ceremony back then from Switzerland is actually the very moment I started to see China differently, away from the cartoonish image almost everyone in the West has about the country. I remember the moment extremely well: we were in our living room watching the ceremony with my wife (then girlfriend) and she started crying. Now my wife is anything but an emotional person; in fact she's easily one of the most pragmatic and level-headed persons I've ever met. So seeing her cry, which I think was the first time in our relationship of 2-year back then, was a huge surprise to me. Why was she crying? Because to her that ceremony symbolized one thing: that China, her country, had finally regained its pride after about 200 years of unbelievable hardship. China finally held its head high on the world stage. And I bet a significant proportion of Chinese people watching the ceremony that day were crying too, for the exact same reason. This wasn't a political thing, my wife couldn't care less about politics, it was much much deeper than this: a very profound attachment to her country and people that transcends governments and systems, reaching into the very soul of Chinese civilization. And in that moment I also realized another thing, which hasn't left me since: I realized our pettiness at reducing China to simplified - and overwhelmingly critical - headlines and convenient narratives. I realized how we actually completely miss the deeply human story under it, of a people who endured colonial humiliation and devastating wars finally writing their own story again. I realized how shameful our condescension and all-too-easy judgements were, while failing to recognize the profound dignity in China's collective journey. That's the lesson this 2008 Olympics ceremony taught me: that nations, like people, deserve to be seen in their full humanity, not just through the convenient lens of our own self-serving narratives. Seventeen years later, standing today with my wife and daughters before these drums in Changchun, I'm struck again by how a single moment of empathy changed my entire worldview—proving that sometimes our most profound lessons aren't taught in classrooms or books, but in quiet moments when we allow ourselves to see the world through someone else's tears.

I was happy to receive the "Outstanding Higher Education Stalwart of the Year" award for 2024 from The Economic Times (Economic Times) last night in Delhi. Of course, there is still so much to do. I returned from the US in 1998 to join IIT Bombay (IIT Bombay) as a faculty member. After 25 years in the IIT system (18 years as a faculty member in IIT Bombay and 7 years in IIT Delhi, of which 6 years as the Director of IIT Delhi), I am now with the BITS Pilanii as a group Vice Chancellor since March 2023. All these three institutions happen to be the Institutions of Eminence (IoE) as recognized by the Ministry of Education Ministry of Education, Govt of India. #IIT Delhi received the #IoE status during my time as the Director IIT Delhi following a highly competitive process. Higher education needs major structural #reforms in India. We are archaic when it comes to managing our best institutions. While Public institutions are dependent on Govt of India for 90% of their funding, Private institutions are dependent on tuition fee for 90% of their sustenance. Both are flawed #financial #models. We need to develop a #diversified financial model where endowments, overheads on research and tuition fee contribute an equal share. It requires major #policy tweaks. We need to seriously look at Study Now-Pay Later kind of models on the lines of Australia's HELP scheme. American higher education funding models burden the students with #debt. So much needs to be done in this space in India. Without a proper financial model in place, our institutions are totally at the mercy of bureaucrats and politicians. State #universities are already on their knees and it won't be long before the same happens with our centrally funded Institutions. Industry is the bridge between #research (generation of knowledge) and #innovation (utilization of knowledge for public good). With India ranked 66th among the 130 countries when it comes to academia-industry collaborations, it's clear what we need to do to promote innovation. It's again the Government which needs to make favorable policies for promoting #academia-#industry collaborations. Hope to see some of these #reforms taken up by the new government.

It was two years ago today that two armed federal agents showed up to my home. We knew they chose that day, June 23, 2023, for a specific reason. It was one of the most important days of my life - my graduation from surgical training. Because of all the sacrifice that comes from surgical training, these are one of those moments you never forget. A few hours before the ceremony (so a few hours before this video was filmed) armed agents were at my door. My wife, Andrea, and I knew they chose that day because of what it represented. They were using the value of my accomplishments as the means to extort my compliance with their corrupt investigation. They were holding my entire future hostage and hoping I would be overwhelmed by fear. But that's not what happened. After the agents left, for those first few moments we were terrified but then something changed. We were angry, righteously indignant, hopelessly defiant. The political insanity over the preceding years had taken away so much from us - our country as we knew it, our hopes for the future, the friends we cared about, and so much else. They came to my home that day to take more. But that was the day we decided we weren't going to let them take away anything else. The line in the sand had been drawn. Instead of hiding in fear, Andrea and I opened a few bottles of champaign, sat on our patio, played Vietnam war music, and chain smoked a whole pack of cigarettes (both of us are nonsmokers but it seemed like the right thing to do in the moment). We went to my graduation that night and celebrated everything we accomplished. Today was the first time I saw my graduation video and the speech one of my attendings gave about me. It's overwhelming to think back to that night and to listen to those words. I remember standing on that stage that night and thinking to myself that all of the reasons he gave for why I was a good surgeon were the same reasons federal agents were at my door a few hours before. I was being targeted not because I had done something wrong but because I upheld the principles of my profession. They thought they would destroy me, have me renounce what I knew to be good and true, and turn me to dust. But as we all know now, a totally different story played out. And for the people who were responsible for this treacherous corruption, the story is only just beginning.

sungjin sharing his story on day6 10th anniversary documentary 🐻 "for about three years, i didn't talk. i literally didn't say anything except for the things necessary for work. it was pretty much a cycle of only speaking when we were working. there was definitely a period when i resented the members a bit, thinking, "if i were them and i had a member like me, i would have done things this way." up until my 20s, i lived with so much passion. i was always trying to find something to keep my emotions from sinking. i kind of took that role. but after that, i think i became a bit more, calm? should i say? i realized that the kids were definitely filling in the other aspects i couldn't. i had been caring for them in certain aspects, and they, in turn, were caring for me in other ways. realizing this made me so grateful to them. and at the same time it also made me realize "ah, i really am sincere about day6," that's what i thought."
