That still didn’t break me. That still didn’t hold me back. I went and built anyway. Kept creating. Kept evolving. Kept winning on my own terms. One thing a bad debt can steal from you is your confidence. One pattern I’ve noticed with many people who fail publicly and never recover is that they hide. And I have come to believe that hiding is one of the fastest ways to destroy a great future. Because while you are hiding, opportunities cannot find you. Relationships begin to fade. Your confidence deteriorates. Before long, you become a shadow of yourself. When I found myself in debt, I was deeply ashamed. But I told myself one thing: hiding would not pay the debt. I approached my banks. I was honest with the people I owed. Some understood. Some didn’t. Some dragged me publicly. Some tarnished my name with lies. It hurt, but I refused to disappear. I remember one loan app in particular out of the many ones I borrowed from, Carbon. Every time they called, I picked. They would ask when I intended to pay, and I would tell them the truth. Sometimes I would say, “I don’t have the money today, but this is what I can pay on this date.” And somehow, don’t know how but they won’t call me until the day I had given. I spent well over a year clearing that debt little by little. There was no need to harass my family or friends because I never ran from the conversation. I answered the calls, even though every ringtone sent my heart racing. Some people I owed became angry that I was still posting online, still smiling, still living my life. But I had to remind myself that disappearing would not magically produce the money I owed. If anything, hiding would only cut me off from the very opportunities that could help me repay those debts. Looking back today, I’m grateful I didn’t surrender to shame. Shame tells you to hide. Wisdom tells you to face reality. Growth begins the day you stop running from your problems and start confronting them, however imperfectly. That season changed me. It built resilience I could never have learnt in comfort. A few days ago, my current political mentor told me something profound. He said, “Pauline, as you embark on this journey, there will be people who support you and love you unconditionally. Even when you make mistakes, they will extend grace. But there will also be those who will never like or love you, no matter what you do. In their eyes, you can never be right.” Today, I want to speak about the second group. For a long time, they dismissed me as a “keyboard warrior,” insisting I would never step onto the ground. When I did step onto the ground, the narrative changed. Suddenly, every minor mistake becomes a major narrative. They say I cannot speak. They say I should retreat back to social media. In Kitengela, where the state destroyed the sound system, making it difficult to address the people with an almost dysfunctional sound system, these people have clipped a moment and turned it into a tool for mockery. But here is my message to them: History reminds us of great leaders who has way worse oratory shortcomings, but achieved way more than most of us will in a lifetime. Even Moses in the Bible was one such. If eloquence alone were the measure of leadership, our country would be doing way better than it is under the current leadership. This journey is bigger than clips, critics, or commentary. The horse has already bolted, and there is no going back. I will learn what I need to learn, and grow where I need to grow.
