In the late 1970’s, I calculated that we were going to have a global debt default. I was so confident in what that meant for the markets that I went to Congress to share my perspective. I couldn’t have been more wrong. While several countries defaulted on their debt, the impact on markets was the opposite of what I expected. And I lost a lot of money — for me and for my clients. I had to let all of my employees go. But it was the best experience that ever happened to me because it taught me that pain + reflection = progress. And it taught me three lessons that became the foundation of Bridgewater’s success.

In Churo, Baringo County today, I heard our people speak about marginalization, insecurity and poverty. Their stories took me back to my own. I wore shorts for the first time after my circumcision rites. Shoes only came when I joined secondary school. Free education changed everything for me. It took me to the Chief Justice's chair. We will not deny the children of Churo that same door. That is why I am in this race.

Moses Kuria: I am paying 27000 from my salary. Before, Onyonka and I were paying 1700. My driver was paying 1700. My 27000 is a lot for me, but am I complaining? No, because I am saving the money I was contributing in other harambees. I am sure that my 27000 is treating somebody in Mandera that I don’t know. It is just the same harambee we are contributing to only now it is one big harambee. Somebody who was paying 1700 has now to pay 30000 for people that some of them he knows them, some he doesn’t know.
