🐿 It seems pretty hard to instantly make yourself feel better when you’re in a bad mood. I also have a lot of days when I’m feeling down, days that are tough, or days when my thoughts are overwhelming. Even on days filled with good things, or during periods when lots of nice things are happening, my mood can still dip sometimes. So don’t think it’s too strange or that something’s wrong with you. When you’re feeling bad, just acknowledge it: “Ah, I’m in a bad mood right now.” There are all kinds of reasons why that can happen. Honestly, sometimes there’s a real reason.. something genuinely upsetting happened to you, or you’re anxious about something. Life is full of those moments. You might feel bad because you feel sorry toward someone, or because you did something wrong, or because something made you really angry. There are so many possible reasons. I think the most important thing when you’re in a bad mood is recognizing it. Like, “I’m in a bad mood because of this specific thing, and it’s making me angry.” But sometimes you realize, “Honestly, this isn’t even something I should be this upset about, yet I am.. and if I lash out at others, it’ll seem weird.” In those moments, being aware of your own state is crucial. You have to tell yourself, “Right now I’m really angry and sensitive. If anyone touches a nerve, I might explode.” You can either carefully avoid people, or give them a heads-up in advance. It feels necessary to do that kind of prep work.. like nicely letting others know, “I’m in a bad mood today, so I think I should be alone,” or “I might end up hurting the people around me without meaning to.” If you have no choice but to meet people, you can say something like, “I had something upsetting happen today, and I don’t want it to affect you. I’m a bit down compared to usual, so I’d appreciate it if you could understand.” Having the courage to communicate that is a really valuable effort. No matter how close someone is to you, or how often you see them every day, emotions turn into attitude in the moment. If a sensitive version of yourself ends up being sharp with someone you care about, or if someone treats you differently than usual for something you didn’t even do, even the kindest and closest people will feel hurt. So when you’re in a bad mood, it’s better to be extra mindful of how you affect those around you. If you can’t make yourself feel better right away, at least try not to hurt the people who are precious to you and close to you. That’s the best way to avoid regret tomorrow or the day after. It’s really difficult, though. It’s genuinely hard, and I still don’t do it well sometimes. But someone asked earlier how to feel better when you’re in a bad mood, so I ended up sharing all this. I still find it difficult myself. That said, being able to apologize properly after some time has passed is also a huge act of courage. Since we’re only human, these situations can happen. When they do, it’s good to talk it out honestly: “I’m sorry about earlier. I was like that because of something, but actually it wasn’t what I thought. I’m sorry.” Of course, if the person involved is the direct reason for your bad mood, then it’s something you should resolve through good conversation.. clearly expressing your feelings. This isn’t about becoming foolish, dumb, or overly naïve. It’s actually about becoming smarter and wiser. That’s what I think.
