She’s sitting on the sidewalk selling $2 lettuce. That’s not getting rich, that’s scraping by. Leave her alone.
And that’s what I don’t understand. Everyone gets angry about stolen merchandise being sold on sidewalks or at 16th & Mission — but hardly anyone talks about donated food being collected for free and then resold. Why is one treated like a problem while the other is mostly ignored? Food assistance is a limited resource meant for people who actually need it.
They're going to throw that food in the trash anyway! Let the poor little lady make some money. At least she's trying to support herself!

Isn't it better if it's donated food rather than stolen? They're increasing the value of the donated food. It's enterprising. They're adding convenience value to a passer by.

Not to defend her but as someone who grew up in SF tenderloin on welfare and living next to these people, the reality is that a lot of these groceries simply aren't what they're used to eating, so frankly what most end up doing is using the cash to buy groceries they actually before from Chinatown.
In this situation, an elderly Asian woman is selling items she received from food pantry’s and community food donations. She probably uses these funds to go and purchase food items from Asian markets, where she can find items more suitable to her diet. WTF is the problem?

They aren't harming anyone. They didn't steal it either. They worked for it and put in the hours. They were eligible for the food they received from pantries. Why don't you work on exposing those who stole products to steal or illegally selling homemade drinks and food.
Imagine robbing your neighbor's house and then selling their stuff in your driveway. The cops don’t care because it’s catch and release.
@FedUpSF They hit all the food giveaways that were created for COVID and magically remain. They’re organized and often use vehicles parked nearby. They take nearly half of all free food distributed in SF. Some go through the bags and toss food near where they received it.
Chinese grandparents. Their kids probably have good jobs and they do this just because they can’t believe how easy it is to make a few bucks. And yes, some Chinese abuse the food banks.

as someone who's family needed food from the free food giveaways, the old Asian ladies will line up hours before opening and rush in and grab EVERYTHING. they will do this anywhere food is given away.

they do it here in Vancouver too a whole brigade of elderly Chinese come to the DTES via bus or brand new cars and go to every free food place take the food and sell it on the streets or other places.

This has been an issue I've been irked about for a very long time. A lot of the places giving out these groceries run out of food and have to turn people away so it's extremely wrong for the few people that get these resources to be out there selling them

Street vending of donated goods is getting out of control and hurts the local food ecosystem.
these old women will do this anywhere food is given away, I couldn't get the free lunches my college gave out because hundreds of these old Asian ladies would be in line standing around for hours ready to take all the food

It’s always the same “type” of person pulling up in their Mercedes or Lexus, pushing some wire framed “laundry cart” to get their free food.
