TPS was never meant to be a permanent immigration policy. Our broken immigration system needs lasting solutions from Congress, not endless temporary extensions. But Congress created TPS for extraordinary circumstances when it is unsafe for people to return home. That is exactly what Venezuela is facing today after the devastating earthquakes. The law is clear. The Administration should redesignate TPS for Venezuelans already in the United States for 18 months while Venezuela recovers. That's not expanding TPS beyond its purpose. It's applying the law exactly as Congress intended.

It is a hopeful thing to hear a young man speak thoughtfully about those permanent things upon which happy lives depend. Ty makes fun of me in the speech. Its quality makes that easy to bear.
