Nixon beat LBJ from the Chair in 1957 to save the first civil rights bill since Reconstruction (Gellman tells the story in detail). In the 1966 campaign RN challenged LBJ & RFK to join him in denouncing segregation & its acolytes-they refused (Buchanan tells the story in detail).

Nixon was no dunce when it came to thinking on his feet in politics.

Supposedly this attack teed up Nixon's nomination, with johnson specifically singling him out as an adversary, and, I believe, doing so while he was in Malaysia or something Nixon took the "high road" and concern trolled about not attacking Johnson while he was overseas, lol
