The recent sweeping up of the streets in Winnipeg resulted in no change in public safety despite being extremely costly. These police sweeps have targeted areas where people receive medical and mental health care, pushing people away from vital services. This was a wasteful exercise that targeted areas where people receive mental health and addiction supports. It only led to more deaths as a result of the toxic drug crisis. We’re now facing a mental health and addictions crisis, a housing crisis, and an HIV crisis in Winnipeg. It’s time to listen to the voices of public health and safety experts and act on their calls to address the underlying causes of these crises, including supports for affordable, rent-geared-to-income housing, public healthcare and mental health services, and youth programming.

AOC: When people see a ballroom and, at the same time, see their health insurance getting cut off, they know that they are paying for that ballroom with no health care, higher grocery prices, and increasingly unaffordable housing. And so I think people are pissed off about it, and they should be. It’s wrong. This is a complete theft of our money. This is what I want people to understand: this is our money. When you pay your taxes, that money is being stolen to pay for a vanity project like a ballroom, or to renovate the Kennedy Center, or whatever it is that this guy wants to do, instead of what it should be used for—paying for things that actually benefit you: better roads, health care, and more affordable groceries.

On this day in 1992, we lost Marsha P. Johnson. 🌸🏳️‍⚧️ A Black trans activist, drag queen and self-described "saint of Christopher Street," Marsha was at the very front of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. She was there at the Stonewall uprising in 1969, marched in the first Pride the following year, and co-founded STAR alongside Sylvia Rivera, giving food, shelter and family to homeless queer and trans youth when almost no one else would. Later, as the AIDS crisis tore through her community, she showed up again, caring for the sick and fighting with ACT UP.
