When New Yorkers say “the city”

it's common in many cities to say you're going to the city when you're technically already there but you mean you're going to the center of the city

As a lifelong NYer, it blew my mind when an out-of-towner referred to The City/Manhattan as “New York” which it factually/literally is but NO ONE ever says that.

The marketing for Manhattan is crazy, it gets everybody

Actually Brooklyn is the city now. Manhattan has to commute in

People who live outside New York usually call it New York, not "the city". It's also very common for residents of a city to refer to parts of the city as "the city", it's not a NYC special thing. You people need to get out more. There is a whole world out there outside NYC
