it's common in many cities to say you're going to the city when you're technically already there but you mean you're going to the center of the city

As a lifelong NYer, it blew my mind when an out-of-towner referred to The City/Manhattan as “New York” which it factually/literally is but NO ONE ever says that.

People who live outside New York usually call it New York, not "the city". It's also very common for residents of a city to refer to parts of the city as "the city", it's not a NYC special thing. You people need to get out more. There is a whole world out there outside NYC
