When Questioning a Government School Becomes a Confrontation A school is supposed to be a place where children learn to question the world. But in Jodhwas, Alwar, Rajasthan, the questions appear to have travelled in the opposite direction — from citizens to the state. The supplied video shows CJP... co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka confronting officials during the School Thik Karo campaign, pressing them over the condition of the school and the basic facilities available to children. The accompanying transcript captures questions about the school's condition and the water being provided to students. This is not merely about one school. A nationwide School Thik Karo campaign has been launched to examine government-school infrastructure and basic amenities. Recent reporting confirms that CJP teams have begun school inspections, while the Rajasthan government has simultaneously issued restrictions on unauthorised entry, photography and videography inside government schools. And that raises the uncomfortable question: Why should the condition of a government school become something to hide rather than something to fix? If children lack safe drinking water, adequate infrastructure or basic facilities, the answer cannot be to control the camera. The answer must be to repair the classroom. The real test of governance is not the grandeur of a government building, a slogan, or a publicity campaign. It is whether a child sitting in the last classroom of a government school receives the dignity that the Constitution promises every citizen. A democracy should never be frightened by questions asked on behalf of children. Fix the school. Listen to the children. Answer the citizens. Selston High School. Today I asked the Government about Selston High School, 25% of which is currently closed off due to structural issues in the building. To that end I am supporting the school in submitting a bid to the Government to have the school rebuilt through the School Rebuilding Programme. This programme is a continuation of the one in which Ashfield School and Outwood Academy Kirkby's respective bids were successful after I supported their bids. I asked the Minister to ensure that Selston High School also gets the money for the school to be rebuilt.

An old student of Tema Senior High School in the Greater Accra Region has confirmed to me that this is the situation in the school. How would students in situations like this turn out if the government pays their school fees but neglects to provide for their teaching and learning needs? The heads of schools are afraid to complain because they fear victimisation from the government. At the end of the day, the government boasts about the numbers that go through secondary school and credits that to the Free SHS policy. But would you like your son or daughter to go through this? This is a school in the Greater Accra Region. Some rural basic and secondary schools are worse than this.

I just watched this disturbing video of nursery school pupils of Community Primary School, Umuora Obulechi, Oriuzor, in Ezza North LGA of Ebonyi State, receiving lessons in their terrible classroom. The government just suspended the teacher and principal for letting someone show the rot in this school. This same state spent billions sending a handful of persons to the UK for education while ignoring the poor children and poor families. Let’s find the suspended teachers and support them. We can pay them a year salary each and find other ways to support them. For the government that suspended them, shame on you. Fix this school for Christ sake and don’t be wicked to these children.

This is a middle school which has only two teachers, who are teaching the students on contractual basis. According to the students rest of the teachers along with the headmistress often remain absent from the school. The school possesses no adequate facilities including doors & windows, desks & mats for students. It also lacks water & washroom facilities for the female students. Building of the school is ruined & is unsuitable to b used anymore. BSAC (BSAC) ,under the banner of BLC, demands for its renovation with all possible facilities & enough teaching staff to ensure the quality education of the students of Greshag. This is required on urgent basis.

It's high time that no government school should allow any outsider to enter the school without permission.

In Hooghly district, 68 young students aged 5 to 10 are being forced to sit in classrooms holding umbrellas — because rainwater leaks through the broken roof of their school. Where are the thousands of crores claimed to be spent on school infrastructure? Where is the much-hyped “Banglar Shiksha”? When the government is busy promoting appeasement and photo-ops, this is what children in Bengal endure — a collapsed system, no dignity, no basic facilities. This is not governance. This is criminal neglect.

I made an unfiltered video explaining how we solved the fundamental data and attendance problems in education. If teachers don’t come to school then students won’t learn and if students miss school, it will also affect their learning. When a child attends school 100% and still fail, then it’s the fault of the teacher. Our system tracks everyone and it’s extremely helpful for the government to track live data as well. Every child should be accounted for because they matter. Imagine a state government knowing exactly the number of children currently in school? That will be a no brainer. Decision making will be precise and transformative. I will continue to do my best to ensure that we fix education in Nigeria.

He advocated for a school feeding program where a child in Nigeria can be assured of a pint of milk, a sandwich and egg. The funny thing is that he did it as Governor of Lagos in partnership with Cadbury, Nestle etc. School feeding program is key to enrolment and attendance. If the almajiri child is assured of food in school, he will go to school. Even their parents would be the ones to push them to school. If a child on the streets of Lagos can eat a decent meal in School, they will stay in class. The UK has a comprehensive school feeding program. The US has a National School Lunch Program. Trying to enroll and teach hungry kids in school is a waste of time. You need to outgrow this 2022 cut and join video format.

The government claims an extra half a million children will benefit from the extension of the scheme. Charities have largely welcomed the move. The Prime Minister said it would help to "tackle the stain of poverty" and set children up to learn. Nitya Rajan is at a secondary school in Birmingham.
