I detest woke shit but alimony makes sense in specific situations where one parent (usually the woman) stays home to raise the children at the expense of seeking an education/seeking promotions. FYI I'm an attorney and have actually handled these issues in court.

Marriage and family law is so screwed up in the US. Fixing it isn't as simple as a single gotchya question. First, minimize government involvement. Make marriage require a civil contract where these matters are resolved in the contract prior to the marriage but modifiable over its lifetime with all party's consent. If the marriage is between two income come earners, then they can spell out 50/50 or whatever split they want at the start. If it's traditional marriage, which doesn't provide for divorce accept under extreme circumstances, but provides alimony and child support in that rare case, they can do that. In the end it should be up to the two to work it out. The state's role should be limited only to requiring such a contract for marriage. If a child is born out of wedlock with no contract, the parent most capable of supporting the child should be granted soul custody and responsibility for the child. That's it. No 'family law'. No government enforced child support or alimony. Just civil contracts between two people spelling out the responsibilities, authorities, obligations and conditions of disillusionment. It's not up to the government, community, or society how family's function, it should be the soul domain of those forming such a union.
