When Rudolf Nureyev appeared on The Muppet Show, classical ballet unexpectedly stepped into the playful world of puppets. An unexpected and charming crossover, showing that great art can also be accessible, engaging, and full of appeal.

🤣🤣 The ballerina inside the Miss Piggy costume during Rudolf Nureyev's appearance on The Muppet Show was Graham Fletcher, a Royal Ballet soloist. Graham Fletcher performed in the large, foam-rubber costume, measured 104 X 80 X 96 inches and used 40 yards of tulle for the tutu.

I love moments like this when something as elegant as classical ballet meets a world as playful as The Muppets. Nureyev’s appearance made the arts feel warm, fun, and accessible to everyone.

Wow I love this, never saw it before!! How brilliant that Nureyev joined in - giving so many more people the opportunity of seeing him via TV rather than in (expensive) classical performances which are so often out of reach for many.

Maybe it's me because I'm overweight, but this performance reinforced stereotypes. It would have been funny on its own rather than having made fun of Miss Piggy. Think of all the chubby girls who wanted to be ballerinas.

We aren't attractive to everyone, but I think every woman needs a man who finds her unreasonably attractive and ignores others. This may happen through the man's regular devotion to his wife: "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her"

This could have been performed by the same characters without the fat shaming, misogyny, and still be a delightful piece. The gag that it was a pig was enough. The rest was a bit much.

🦢 Just look at these “swans” This is the acrobatic drama “Swan” — a mix of ballet, theater and Chinese “shoulder ballet,” where the dancer performs on her partner’s head and hands. The show tells the story of acrobat Yu Meng, who pioneered the fusion of classical ballet with Chinese acrobatics, creating a new genre. Strength, balance and control pushed to the limit.
