Sammy joining the band took them to levels they never could have dreamt of reaching with DLR, he wasn’t capable of it. Sammy is a far superior a musician to DLR, and was doing excellent even before joining VH.

Interesting trivia on Van Halen and the names they went by in the years. In 1964, the very first band Eddie and Alex Van Halen started was called the Broken Combs. They later went by Trojan Rubber Co. Around 1971–1972, the brothers (with bassist Mark Stone) renamed the group Genesis. They were mostly a cover band at this point. They changed the name to Mammoth after discovering Genesis was already taken as a band name. In 1973-1974, the band finally settled on Van Halen.

Today in Rock History April 5, 1984 MTV partnered with Van Halen to create one of the most infamous rock-and-roll contests in music history: The Lost Weekend with Van Halen. As part of the promotional campaign for their 1984 album, the band invited fans to send in postcards for a chance to win a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The winner would join Van Halen on their tour, party with the band backstage, and live like a rock star for 48 hours for two shows on the 4th and 5th of April. The contest gathered massive attention receiving over a million entries. The winner was 20-year-old Kurt Jeffries from Pennsylvania. Jeffries and a friend were flown to Detroit, where they were thrown headfirst into the hedonistic world of 1980s Van Halen. The prize lived up to its “lost weekend” moniker: limo rides, all-access passes, backstage partying with the band, and non-stop drinking. MTV filmed much of the chaos, airing highlights of the debauchery, including scenes of Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth reveling in their rock-god personas. For Jeffries, the experience was both surreal and unforgettable, embodying the excess, glamour, and unpredictability of the 1980s rock-and-roll lifestyle.

Vicious Lips (1986). What if we put a New Wave band into space? Well director Albert Pyun did just that, taking the songs of Californian band Sue Saad and the Next and giving them to Judy Jetson (played by Dru-Anne Perry) and her space band Vicious Lips. The plot? Hmm, the band have to get to a gig on the far side of the galaxy and it's a bit tricky. That's about it. But this was shot guerrilla style in a week and the big hair / big guitar combo makes it feel like an MTV movie for a band that never broke through. It is very '80s and for that it's certainly worth a watch.

Edward dubbed it the “Ambulance Tour” due to the hip and neck issues of the Van Halen brothers. The 131-stop tour featured a Jumbotron for the first time, with Sammy battling the flu and Eddie and Alex facing health challenges, making for a memorable set of shows. The Pensacola opener was a sold-out show, setting the tone for a tour remembered for its resilience amid adversity. Tensions within the band (particularly between Eddie and Sammy) escalated during this period, contributing to the eventual breakup in 1996.
