It’s now snowing in #Boston, and Winter Storm #Fern is getting to work ❄️ This remains a high-impact storm for the city and surrounding communities, with 18–24 inches of snow still expected across much of the metro area. It’s bitterly cold, and the snow is light and fluffy, which means it piles up quickly and reduces visibility fast. Boston is already responding in force. A conga line of snow plows is rolling through neighborhoods, nearly 900 crews are deployed clearing city streets, and the city has 40,000 tons of salt on hand for this storm and whatever winter throws next. Timing for Boston: • Snow underway now • Heaviest snow late afternoon into early evening • Brief bursts of 2–3 inches per hour possible around dinner time Road conditions will continue to deteriorate. If you don’t have to be out, don’t be. Our snow plow crews have been working hard from Lake Tahoe to as low as Foresthill to keep our roads clear. Today, we were out at the Alta/Dutch Flat area capturing one of our Placer County snow plows in action! ❄️🚜 When the snow is cold, heavy and wet like it’s been this week, plowing can be especially challenging, and it can take multiple passes to fully clear the road. No matter the conditions, our crews are working around the clock to Keep Placer Moving. If you see them out there, give them plenty of space and a wave! 👋

Prime example of why this is a forecast you'll want to keep an eye on. Yesterday models had feet possible for portions of NC - today, highest totals up to a foot. On average Raleigh gets 5 inches of snow for the entire winter season, we could see that much from this one storm.

The difference between de-icing and anti-icing ❄️✈️ Pilots are required to ensure that the wings and all control surfaces are clear of any form of frozen contamination. Even small amounts of ice on the wing can significantly reduce its lift capability as well as the stalling angle of attack. De-icing fluid is used when the aircraft is contaminated with snow or ice which needs to be removed, but no further freezing precipitation is expected before departure. This can be accompanied by spraying heated fluid onto the aircraft to remove the contamination. If protection from further frozen contamination buildup is required, such as when it’s snowing, we then spray a second fluid over the clean wing, which adheres to the wing and prevents the buildup for a period of time. This time of protection is called the ‘holdover time’ Pilots calculate the holdover time for the fluid used by using tables and entering the fluid type, concentration, type of precipitation and temperature. As a general rule, the higher the number of the fluid used, the longer the holdover time. Eg Type 2 fluid offers a shorter holdover time than Type 4. The fluids can also be diluted to offer varying levels of protection. Eg 75/25 - This means that the mixture being used consists of 75% de-icing fluid and 25% water. The longest holdover time is achieved by using 100% fluid but this can be less environmentally friendly and very expensive. A Blizzard… and Not the Dairy Queen Kind ❄️🍦 The forecast says it’s going to get icy and snowy across Kansas and the Midwest this weekend—not a full-on blizzard, but enough to remind us that winter is here. To get my mind right, I swung through Dairy Queen and grabbed a Blizzard. (Because what better way to prepare for cold weather than holding one in your hand, right?) In the video, I highlight some of the items I keep in my patrol car to stay ready for winter weather. Not all of them, though—I didn’t want to make this a 20-minute video. What about you? What do you keep in your vehicle when the roads turn icy? Share your tips in the comments—you might help someone else get ready for the storm!
