Yesterday, I met with folks at UnitedAgainstPoverty who are worried about how the shutdown will impact them. Why are Democrats willing to look the other way while SNAP benefits are stolen from the families who actually need them? I was raised by a single mother in abject rural poverty. I know what it means for a family to need help putting food on the table. This is why ensuring families have access to SNAP is an emergency situation. ⬇️ SNAP provides about $6 a day for food—which is just enough to help keep families from going hungry, but never enough to get ahead. If funds don’t go out this weekend, millions of kids, seniors, families, and people with disabilities will wake up Saturday without money for groceries. This crisis can be averted. Trump’s USDA must release contingency funds already approved by Congress to every single state!

SNAP recipient: I work as a substitute teacher, so I only get paid on to the days that I work. My husband also is permanently disabled, and he receives monthly Social Security benefits. So I rely on SNAP benefits to provide food for my house so that me, my husband, and my children will be able to eat.

USDA let outdated SNAP cards stay vulnerable, and families lost about $555 million in food benefits, not to “cheating,” but to skimming and theft. Instead of fixing the tech, they policed recipients and fed the fraud myth. And in most states, they have stopped reimbursing stolen funds. The real fraud problem is criminals skimming benefits from outdated magnetic-stripe cards that USDA refused to fix.
