When something breaks at sea, you cannot always order a replacement and wait. Machinery Repairmen machine, fabricate, and repair what the ship needs, often from raw material.

As a shop teacher this is gold. I will be showing this to the kids.

Ships have machine shops that can turn out almost anything, even submarines may have a little baby lathe and press. The Enterprise had a fully equipped large machine shop and did not know it until a refueling overhauls discovered it. The machines had been lifted in before the overhead was installed and the hatches were never cut in to the bulkheads. An electrician was tracing conduit and found one that went into a bulkhead and did not come out.

We should have TOO many of these trained in military each year and grants to give them their own machine at the end of 20 years of service.
