I think making him walk back to refill it is fine. I think if my mother followed me in the car and filmed me walking back, I'd resent her for the rest of my life.

No, that's not raising men. What you're raising is a slave to what your beliefs are. That gas can is almost as big as him. I'd bet you sit on your ass all day and expect men to do everything for you. that's the vibe I get!

There is no shame in admitting you made a mistake and asking for help as a man. There is no shame in being taught a hard lesson and making him go fill it himself, either. Being told to do it while being followed in a car and filmed for social media likes is neither.

He'll learn from this to check the fuel before going out and top it up when it's at home. Making a silly mistake, then paying the consequence of lugging fuel 1/2 mile is a good lesson in preparedness. This type of experience will reduce failures in the future with better planning.

Problem solving would be not filling the gas can full when you could just fill it an 1/8th and drive it home to fill up.

My Mainer mother was hard core. Got a job at the YMCA camp for city kids. I had to buy a bicycle. $35 from the neighbor. 3-speed. It was 9 miles, round trip, to get to the YMCA camp. Not flat. No sidewalks. That camp had city kids come out to have fun. There was no fun camp for poor kids in the country. My fun camp was being paid $3.35 an hour and riding my 3 speed bicycle 9 miles, every day. Trust me when I tell you basic training in the @USArmy was easy.

Seems to me that anyone over 5 with an IQ above refrigerator temps would know that the easiest solution is to get someone to drive you and the can back to the ATV. But yeah, he really solved that problem by walking half a mile while you followed him and recorded everything.

Letting a natural consequence play out, assuming it won’t cause serious injury, is the best “punishment” a parent can give. What would be worse would be to drive him there and browbeat him for making her have to.

I would've told him to find a smaller container to put enough gas in to get the quad back. It would take no more than a pint, not 5 gallons. I'd rather teach him critical thinking skills.
